A soldier is a person who has enlisted with, or was drafted into, the armed forces of a sovereign country and has undergone training and received equipment to defend that country or its interests.
Soldiers are a part of strictly hierarchical societies called armies.
Infantry that are not soldiers include members of the RAF Regiment of the United Kingdom (technically they are airmen not soldiers), and members of the United States Marine Corps, Royal Marines of the United Kingdom, or other marine forces (who are marines not soldiers; in fact many marines bristle at being called soldiers).

Since the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan began last year, 17 soldiers from Fort Drum have died during deployment, including 15 whose deaths are listed as combat-related.
When a 10th Mountain Division soldier is killed in battle, there is little visible acknowledgment on post -- although emotions among the troops run deep, said R.D. Murphy, a Fort Drum spokesman.
The body is shipped back to the soldier's family in their hometown, often located in another state, doing away with the need for a memorial service on post, Murphy said.

The pleas of the colonists of New France for assistance in their struggle with the Iroquois were answered in 1665 with the arrival of the first French regular troops in Canada, the Carignan-Salières Regiment.
The series of forts established by the Regiment along the Richelieu River, along with the success of its second campaign into the land of the Mohawk Indians, led to a long period of peace for the colony, which permitted it to prosper.
In addition to the list of soldiers and officers on the official "roll" of the Regiment, there were many others who participated in the successful campaign against the Iroquois, including many militiamen who resided in the colony but whose names were not recorded for posterity.

The Bosnian Serb government has compiled a list of nearly 20,000 Serb soldiers who operated in Srebrenica at the time of the 1995 massacre there.
The secret list is part of an ongoing move by the international community to force the Bosnian Serb government to account for the war crimes committed at Srebrenica, a BBC correspondent said.
According to the report, the list includes about 900 soldiers still working for the Bosnian Serb government, army or police.
