Piano - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The word piano is a short form of the word "pianoforte", which is in turn derived from the original Italian name for the instrument, gravicembalo col piano e forte.
The Broadwood firm, which sent pianos to both Haydn and Beethoven, was the first to build pianos with a range of more than five octaves: five octaves and a fifth during the 1790s, six by 1810 (in time for Beethoven to use the extra notes in his later works), and seven by 1820.
With the exception of the toy piano, these instruments are called "piano" by virtue of being keyboard instruments but are electric or electronic in nature, not acoustic.

Toy piano - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The first toy pianos were made in the mid-19th century and were typically uprights, although many toy pianos made today are models of grands.
Toy pianos ostensibly use the same musical scale as full size pianos, although their tuning in all but the most expensive models is usually very approximate.
A pioneer of the toy piano is the German composer and pianist Bernd Wiesemann (*1938).

To “prepare” a piano, composers change something about the piano’s physical structure to alter the sound, traditionally putting objects next to the strings, such as nuts and bolts or planks of wood, to interfere with and contribute to the sounds made by playing the piano.
The Piano (1993) tells the story of a mute Scottish woman who marries a man from New Zealand and moves with her young daughter to be with him, even though he is not the kind man that she thought he was.

 SPP CD Review: David Lanz
The pieces include “Leaves on the Seine,” “Courage of the Wind,” Water From the Moon,” and “Faces of the Forest.” “Nightfall” is still available in its original form, and also as a remastered set with “Heartsounds,” Lanz’s debut recording on Narada.
Some of these pieces are quite different from anything Lanz has recorded before, and with “In Stillness” and the title track especially, he seems to have embraced the freedom from worrying about commercial success or trying to find a radio-friendly sound.
As most of Lanz's solo piano recordings are, this album is introspective and calming, and, with a couple of exceptions, most of the arrangements are rather somber.
