Many of the pieces are more classically structured than the music of other artists in the genre, and indicate a very well-trained and creative pianist-composer (he attended the prestigious Berklee School of Music).
A beautiful series of reflective and introspective piano solos, these pieces are both intensely personal and easily accessible.
The harmonic textures/changes of this piece are simple, the harmonies remind me of Bruce Hornsby and the Range when they were popular in the eighties.

Stride piano came some out of the ragtime tradition of Scott Joplin and the other great ragtime composers from the early 1900s, but the tempos are much faster, there is much more improvisation, and more harmonic development.
The solo piano dances I do, is where the piano is a one man band kind of thing which go 3 hours or more, of one long medley of RandBsongs, slow dance songs, Soul, Rock, Vince Guaraldi Peanuts pieces, and a bit of Latin, Blues, and occasional waltzes (these are not Modern Dance/Ballet piano dances).
Fess had many inventions on the piano (as they were coined by the great New Orleans pianist and composer Allen Toussaint.) He always put his own completely unique and innovative stamp on every song he played, whether it was an original composition or a masterful interpretation of another composer’s song.

All The Seasons Of George Winston: Piano Solos   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
Winston shortened his pieces to make singles for radio air-play over the years, but it seems that these edited selections might also have been calculated to appeal to a more mainstream, pop-oriented audience.
For pure solo piano that isn't drowned out by orchestra or diluted by vocals and other musicians, I don't think George Winston can be beat.
All the Seasons presents 13 abridged selections from Winston's seven solo recordings-- "radio edits" that were supervised, as the liner notes indicate, by the pianist himself.

Ravels piano works are, in all senses, composures of 20th century modernity, suffused with the country-stylised effects of, say, Emmylou Harris, and the impecably marked greenhouse-jubilance connecting all the pieces in one final exotic anti-frenzy makes certain implications on ones ability to hate.
Sometimes however, with the smaller lesser known pieces such as the Minuet, you get the sense that he is sightreading, not truely feeling the music.
Together with the 2CD set of Debussy's piano works, these two albums are master recordings of the finest impressionist piano music.

Bartok's first two piano concertos represent a radical departure from the romantic bombast of late 19th century piano concertos (that means you, Rachmaninov).
With no obvious precedents, outside his own earlier solo piano work (like Allegro Barbaro) and, perhaps, Stravinsky's "Les Noces", Bartok radically reappraises the role of the piano in the context of a classical concerto, emphasising its percussive qualities ahead of its melodic potential.
Bartok's mastery of counterpoint is total and to hear tiny phrases being swapped between the piano registers and throughout the orchestra is a constant jolt of excitement.

There is often a tension between what an artist's own perception of his or her work is and how that work is received by the listener.
"Solo" taps again that rich vein that we haven't heard fully expressed since "Lyle Mays" - the beautiful, glassy piano textures, the ethereal backdrops of analog synth, the lyricism of a playing style that knows that it does not need to prove itself.

While Grieg's Piano Concerto in A minor is known the world over (Andsnes has made a celebrated recording) these highly expressive pieces span virtually the length of the composer's career, revealing a poetic sensibility midway between Chopin and Debussy.
In so far as Grieg drew inspiration from his native folk music, the pieces illustrate a benign nationalism, and in the same way Andsnes carries the expectation of being a "Norwegian" artist with a refined musicality, refusing to unnecessarily romanticise what is in the main simple, lyrical music.
Indeed, apart from the playfulness of the "March of the Trolls" and the exuberant "Homeward" and "Wedding Day at Troldhaugen", there is a wonderful impressionistic quality throughout this very satisfying recording.

The pessimistic mood never tips over into melodrama, yet there is plenty of power on reserve: the Jewish "dance of death" theme, recycled from Piano Trio No. 2, is screeched with wide-eyed terror, and there is deadly percussive force behind the three-note cell that heralds the fourth movement.
