This is an alphabetical list of the sovereign states of the world, including both de jure and de facto independent states.
This list derives its definition of a sovereign state from Article 1 of the Montevideo Convention from 1933.
One state, not a UN member since late 1971, recognized by 25 other states as well as Vatican City of the Holy See, and currently with de facto international relations with most states, the Republic of China (ROC), popularly referred to as Taiwan.
