Notice that this is different from the recommended style of recursion down lists, where we do a check for the base case, and assume that otherwise we're looking at the recursive case, so an error will be forced if we get bad input.
Using map, write a procedure enlist that takes a list of items (of any type), and returns a new list whose elements are one-element lists containing the corresponding elements of the original list.

Functions for building lists are called constructors, the most fundamental of which, called first_put, adds an Object to the front of a list by allocating a new pair and setting its car to point to the new Object and its cdr to point to the rest of the list.
Suppose, for example, that the function integers generates the sequential list of integers in the range specified by Its input arguments, that square returns the square of its input, and that sum returns the sum of the integers in its input list.
A list whose first element is a symbol whose symbol_value is a function evaluates to the result of applying that function to the (recursively) evaluated elements of the rest of the list.

Diana Hacker: Language Debates: comma splices
Because comma splices are considered serious errors, drawing the line between acceptable and unacceptable use is fraught with danger.
Although the unintentional comma splice is a serious error, many experts agree that in the hands of an experienced writer, a deliberate comma splice can be effective—but only if no possible misreading results.
Admitting that the distinction between a “desirable and deplorable” comma splice is “often subtle and paper thin,” Follett cautions inexperienced writers to “seek safety through semicolons, conjunctions, or separate sentences” (295—96).

The functions that tear lists apart have very unfortunate names, they are: car, that returns the first item in the list and cdr (pronounced could-er) that returns all but the first item in the list.
It says that the list of positive numbers in the list is the list of positive numbers in the rest of the list.
Obviously the list l could be split by first calling one function to return all the numbers less than or equal to (car l) and then calling a second function to return all the numbers greater than (car l) but this version does not work that way.

The advantage of this approach is eliminating numerous dilemmas about which lists may or must be shared or copied, and how a particular operation should behave when given an improper list, and when particular errors are detected.
There is no temptation to say “well, an improper list here should be an error, but we don't always detect this because it would increase the asymptotic cost for no other gain”.

For certain programs, our technique is able to determine such properties as (1) when the input to the program is a list, the output is also a list and (2) when the input to the program is a tree, the output is also a tree.
For example, the method can determine that ``listness'' is preserved by (1) a program that performs list reversal via destructive updating of the input list and (2) a program that searches a list and splices a new element into the list.
None of the previously known methods that use graphs to model the program's store are capable of determining that ``listness'' is preserved on these examples (or examples of similar complexity).

In this case, the list that mapcar operates on is the value of "body", containing all the expressions that go in the body of our "until" loop.
