A sport consists of a physical and mentally competitive activity carried out with a recreational purpose for competition, for self-enjoyment, to attain excellence, for the development of a skill, or some combination of these.
Team sport refers to sports which are practiced between opposing teams, where the players interact directly and simultaneously between them to achieve the objective, such as football (in its various forms), cricket,curling, baseball, handball, hockey, basketball or volleyball.
The closeness of art and sport in these times was revealed by the nature of the Olympic Games which, as we have seen, were celebrations of both sporting and artistic achievements, poetry, sculpture and architecture.

 Sports Council NI : Governing Bodies in Sport
Sport NI's role is to provide advice and guidance to support governing bodies in the management of their sports, including such areas as strategic planning, raising performance standards, sourcing funding, employment matters and good practice, in a range of areas.
In 2004, Sport NI was awarded £90k from UK Sport to initiate a 'modernisation programme' with the governing bodies of sport.
The purpose of the programme is to encourage the highest standards of practice in governing bodies in relation to areas such as the governance of the sport, HR management, financial management etc.

 NCAA Emerging Sports
An emerging sport is a sport recognized by the NCAA that is intended to provide additional athletics opportunities to female student-athletes.
For purposes of reviewing emerging sports for women proposals, a sport shall be defined as an institutional activity involving physical exertion with the purpose of competition versus other teams or individuals within a collegiate competition structure.
Furthermore, sport includes regularly scheduled team and/or individual, head-to-head competition (at least five) within a defined competitive season(s); and standardized rules with rating/scoring systems ratified by official regulatory agencies and governing bodies.

All recognised sports governing bodies in the UK will this week receive a questionnaire from UK Sport designed to provide a toolkit that will enable them to review operations to identify how they might be repositioned or refocused in the future.
The responses have been extremely useful in enabling Deloitte and Touche to begin work on developing ideas of possible different operating models for governing bodies, as well as identifying a variety of issues concerning the roles of other organisations in the sporting field, including the Sports Councils.
Deloitte and Touche’s final report and outcomes are expected to be available in March and UK Sport is hopeful that the report can be made widely available shortly after that time.
