Whether these names were also included in the list of 257 sportspersons earlier submitted to the court in a sealed cover and kept in the custody of the court registrar, could not be confirmed as the SAI official and counsel said, "It will be known only after perusing the list."
These 39 sportspersons had tested positive between 1995 and 1998 and their respective federations had punished them with a ban ranging from one year to three years, the documents annexed with SAI affidavit said.
The lists containing the 39 names were received by SAI from AAFI, CFI and SFI after the court had sought details about the sportspersons who had tested positive.

LUDUS 1: Centre for Research into Sport and Society: University of Leicester
Of the twenty sportspersons considered in the series, only two were women, namely Mary Rand, who, in 1964, became the first British woman to win an Olympic gold, and Jayne Torvill, being half of the Torvill-Dean partnership who won Olympic gold in ice-dancing in 1984.
This original list contained relatively few women and, even allowing for the fact that considerably more men than women take part in sport, women were still greatly under-represented on this long-list.
Significantly, another cyclist, Tommy Simpson, was on the list, even though his record of one world championship and the achievement of being the first Briton to wear the yellow jersey of race leadership in the Tour de France (he eventually finished fifth in the Tour), pales into insignificance by comparison with that of Burton.

The Sports Authority of India had last year submitted to the court a list of sportspersons found guilty of doping, but the court declined to open it following a request from the SAI and the government counsel, who said making the names public would cause more harm to sports in the country.
Meanwhile, the SAI, in an affidavit filed today, said its role is limited to conducting the tests in its laboratory and sending the results to respective federations from which the samples were received.

Rajan’s story is representative of the callous attitude of this country’s sporting authorities in looking after the welfare of sports personalities, and the neglect they face at the hands of the very government that may have once lauded their achievements as a symbol of national pride.
