List of stars with confirmed extrasolar planets - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
If a planet is detected by the radial velocity method, no information is gained about the inclination of the planet's plane of orbit around its star, and a value for this is needed to calculate the mass.
The star itself is designated with the letter 'a', and orbiting bodies by 'b', 'c', etc. Some extrasolar planets have been given unofficial names, but these are not sanctioned by the International Astronomical Union which oversees astronomical naming, or used in the scientific literature.

Star - Biocrawler   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
The energy produced by stars radiates into space as electromagnetic radiation, as a stream of neutrinos from the star's core, and as a stream of particles from the star's outer layers (its stellar wind).
Stellar astronomy is the study of stars and the phenomena exhibited by the various forms/developmental stages of stars.
As learned by star formation astronomers, stars are born in molecular clouds, large regions of slightly higher density of matter (though still less dense than the inside of an earthly vacuum chamber), and form by gravitational instability inside those clouds triggered by shockwaves from supernovae.

Several extrasolar planets were eventually also detected by observing the variation in a star's apparent luminosity as a planet passed in front of it.
It is the third lightest extrasolar planet orbiting a main sequence star to be discovered to date, and could be the first terrestrial planet around a main sequence star found outside the solar system.
The planet, HD 149026 b orbits the star HD 149026, has a core that is estimated to be 70 Earth masses, accounting for two thirds of the planet's mass.

Extrasolar planets around solar-type stars began to be discovered in large numbers during the late 1990s as a result of improved telescope technology, such as Charge coupled device and computer -based image processing.
When the star's photometry (astronomy) intensity during the eclipse is substracted from the intensity before or after the eclipse, only the signal caused by the planet remains making possible for instance measurement of the planet's temperature or even detection of possible cloud formations on it.

Extrasolar planets were first discovered during the 1990s as a result of improved telescope technology, such as CCD and computer-based image processing along with the Hubble Space Telescope.
Subsequent investigation has determined that these objects are not "true" planets in that they are technically "sub-brown dwarf masses orbiting an object that is or once was a star"; it is believed that they are unusual remnants of the supernova that produced the pulsar, and did not form as conventional planets do.
The frequency of extrasolar planets is one of the parameters in the Drake equation, which attempts to estimate the probability of communications with extraterrestrial intelligence.

Planetary System Encyclopedia Articles @ 216.92.11.26 ()   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
Planetary systems around sun-like stars are generally believed to form as part of the same process which results in star formation.
Some early theories involved another star passing extremely close to the sun, and drawing material out from it which then coalesced to form the planets.
Pulsars are formed in violent supernova explosions, and a normal planetary system could not possibly survive such a blast - planets would either evaporate, or the sudden loss of most of the mass of the central star would see them escape the gravitational hold of the star.

He feels that it is the pulsation of the star itself (oscillatory upheavals in the star's atmosphere) causing the variations, and not the force of gravity exerted on the star by a planetary companion.

Over the past ten years, nearly 200 extrasolar planets have been discovered orbiting nearby solar-like stars, and the discoveries of transiting planets such as HD 209458 b, HD 149026 b, HD 189733 b, and TrES-1 have added an additional element of excitement to the quest for alien solar systems.
At present, the majority of confirmed extrasolar planets have been discovered using the Doppler radial velocity technique (see the tutorials at www.oklo.org).
Members of the public who want to participate in extrasolar planet research, but who do not own telescopes, are encouraged to join the systemic collaboration, to be launched in early 2006.
