In the early 1980s several state roads were renumbered; in the latter half of the 1990s, budget cuts and other factors prompted a series of truncations of several state roads, primarily in urban areas.
The trend seems to have have been reversed since 2002 as new state road designations have been added as a result of construction of new highways, most notably in the Jacksonville, Orlando, and the Tampa-St.

History of the US Highway System   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-07)
Before the Interstate Highway system brought fast, limited access highways to the United States, there was, and still remains, another nationwide system of highways that enabled travelers to follow standardized routes to any part of the nation.
Giving highways throughout the United States a standard numerical designation was a radical idea but at the same time fit in with other innovations at the time.
It appears the original plan was for the Interstate Highways to be co-signed and routed with their corresponding US highway and from about 1960 to 1964 this is exactly what the Division of Highways did.

While 4-digit primary highway numbers are rare in the rest of America, the Bluegrass State has routes in the 3500s - and this doesn't count the "secret" numbers in the 6000s for frontage roads and the like.
But all state routes from KY 1 to the 3500s are considered primary routes, even the ones classed as "supplemental" on the official logs, for existing route signs and most maps use the same shield for all of them.
For each existing route, I list: where the route begins and ends, the route's mileage by county, places where the route "uses" another route, cites along the route, the route's road names, and some route numbers formerly carried by the route.
