Press Release of Representative Jerrold Nadler
Washington, DC -- Representative Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) today called on the Republican leaders of the House of Representatives to resist their annual tradition of stripping a hate crimes provision from the Department of Defense bill.
Current law limits federal jurisdiction over hate crimes to incidents that occur during the exercise of federally protected activities, such as voting, and does not permit federal involvement in a range of cases involving crimes motivated by bias against the victim's sexual orientation, gender or disability.
State and local authorities currently prosecute the overwhelming majority of hate crimes and will continue to do so under this legislation, with the enhanced support of the federal government.

Quotations that Support the Separation of State and Church
The United States of America have exhibited, perhaps, the first example of governments erected on the simple principles of nature; and if men are now sufficiently enlightened to disabuse themselves of artifice, imposture, hypocrisy, and superstition, they will consider this event as an era in their history.
Thirteen governments [of the original states] thus founded on the natural authority of the people alone, without a pretence of miracle or mystery, and which are destined to spread over the northern part of that whole quarter of the globe, are a great point gained in favor of the rights of mankind.
In each such state the people, including church members and the unchurched, were engaged in a revolution against such practices that, without prodding by the federal government, led to the complete abandonment of established churches and religious tests for holding office.
