Connecticut state   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-06)
Connecticut was the fifth of the original 13 states ratifying the Constitution of the United States on January 9, 1788, and it played an important role in the development of the United States.
The state’s armaments industry was an important supplier of firearms during World War I (1914-1918) and World War II (1939-1945), and the world’s first nuclear-powered submarine was launched from a Connecticut shipyard in 1954.
It established the present form of the Congress of the United States: a lower house in which the states are represented on the basis of population and an upper house in which they are represented equally.

Champlain persuaded his leader to allow him to take colonists and "go and settle on the great River St. Lawrence, with which I was familiar through a voyage that I had made there." In 1608 he founded France's first permanent Canadian colony.
The early hopes of the United States to drive the British entirely from North America were dashed by a series of defeats at the hands of British regulars and Canadian militia forces.
The absorption of the British colonies into the United States was again being called for by United States extremists who revived the old cry of "manifest destiny" of their republic.

 [No title]
Finally, in America, we see an enormous nationality formed by the federation of states which partially retain their statehood; and some of these states are themselves of national dimensions, as, for example, New York, which is nearly equal in area, quite equal in population, and far superior in wealth, to Shakespeare's England.
To insure that the government of the nation or the state, of the city or the township, shall be properly administered, requires from every citizen the utmost watchfulness and intelligence of which he is capable.
If such a state of things is long kept up, the spirit of enterprise is weakened, the place shows signs of untidiness and want of thrift, and neighbouring towns, once perhaps far behind it in growth, by and by shoot ahead of it and take away its business.

National Animal Interest Alliance (NAIA) Appeasing Animal Rights Activists Won't Save Pets or Taxpayer Dollars
During the review of AB 1634 in the California Assembly, assembly members were inundated with information, misinformation, emotional pleas and political pressure from all sides, but they did not have the facts they needed to make a well-reasoned decision.
Proponents of AB 1634 use Santa Cruz County, which passed a mandatory spay/neuter law in 1995, as a poster child for the bill, claiming that the Santa Cruz policy led to great reductions in shelter impounds and deaths.
On the other hand, if AB 1634 proponents prevail, California's economy stands to lose at least $100 million in tourism dollars each year if dog and cat events follow through with their vow to boycott the state.

LC Exhibition on Religion and the Founding of the American Republic
In the 1620s leaders of the English state and church grew increasingly unsympathetic to Puritan demands and insisted that they conform to religious practices that they abhorred, removing their ministers from office and threatening them with "extirpation from the earth" if they did not fall in line.
That state's Constitutional Convention included in the draft constitution submitted to the voters the famous Article Three, which authorized the levying of a general religious tax to be directed to the church of a taxpayers' choice.
In response to widespread sentiment that, to survive, the United States needed a stronger federal government, a convention met in Philadelphia in the summer of 1787 and on Sept. 17, 1787, adopted the Constitution of the United States.

Sullivan - History of New York State 1523-1927
So, when the West India Company stated that such a course might be forced upon them unless they should be granted a subsidy, "in order that the colony should be placed in a safe and prosperous condition," the States General did not dismiss such a request summarily.
The States General, though not very strong at that time, had, of course, a certain degree of authority over all the provincial governments, and it was their wish to establish or to get the Company through its provincial Director to establish a governmental system like that of the home provinces in New Netherland.
His inertia in certain dramatic situations was rather the demand of the national state of politics than the manifestation of craven characteristics in himself.

Local History: Towns and Counties of 17th C. Massachusetts
This may be a partial explanation for the fact that most of the records for the earliest towns begin in 1633 or 1634 (although in some cases the first few leaves of the volume may have been lost).
This list was however maintained in chronological order, and by correlating the list with our knowledge of other events, such as deaths or the dates of arrival of immigrants, we can roughly date an admission from this period.
The Salem church records before December 1636 consist only of a rough list of church members, which includes only those persons who were members in later 1636; all those who had joined at an earlier date, but had died or moved away, are omitted from this list.

The present state of Massachusetts, known legally as a commonwealth, was explored in the late 16th and early 17th centuries but was not permanently settled until the Pilgrims settled at Plymouth in 1620.

ACORN leadership also met with House Democratic leaders to coordinate opposition to the Senate's intention to place these amendments on the August 31 primary ballot, instead of the November general election, which would prevent the measures from being considered by a fully engaged and mobilized electorate.
ACORN leaders from across California also attended the hearing and met with their state representatives in support of other bills by allies.
