During the ascendancy of the Mongols, many notable leaders, including Hulegu (the first Ilkhan), belonged to this church, and though reliable statistics are not available, it is likely that this church, whose remnants today number at most a few million, boasted the largest population of any Christian denomination.

This is a list of recreational reading I've done over the years, and some summaries and reactions when I think to write them (and when I have something to say).
Oddly, however, he didn't make the natural leap from these ideas to the Lockean idea of religious toleration, but argued instead that the outward forms of religion must be managed by the government and yet remain tolerant, and that the people can practice the ceremonies of religion regardless of their actual beliefs.
He is not given over to ideologies, and seems to distrust mere ideas as a guide in political affairs; instead he advocates judging situations by and of themselves, as the come, and not letting one's judgment be clouded by "rules" or "policy".

Simon Gates was sued, 9 November 1670 by John Woods of Marlborough for breaking a marriage contract with his daughter Frances.
One source, Charles Otis Gates (Gates Genealogy, 1898) states that Stephen was son of Thomas Gates of Norwich.
