The section of U.S. 276 between State 417 and the entrances to Interstate 385 and the Southern Connector where the Trebings and Sweeney perished is a prime example of the state of road safety in South Carolina — and how elected leaders and administrators struggle to fix the problems.
In light of money problems, state Sen. David Thomas, whose district encompasses the stretch of road where the Trebings and Sweeney perished, says he has been pushing since last year for the transportation department to provide a detailed list that prioritizes which sections of roads are most in need of safety improvements.
If such a list incorporating varying factors can be formulated, Thomas says the results might find that U.S. 276 is a priority to be addressed sooner than later, even though U.S. 276 is not a road considered to have a high fatality rate compared to other roads.

Quotations that Support the Separation of State and Church
The United States of America have exhibited, perhaps, the first example of governments erected on the simple principles of nature; and if men are now sufficiently enlightened to disabuse themselves of artifice, imposture, hypocrisy, and superstition, they will consider this event as an era in their history.
Thirteen governments [of the original states] thus founded on the natural authority of the people alone, without a pretence of miracle or mystery, and which are destined to spread over the northern part of that whole quarter of the globe, are a great point gained in favor of the rights of mankind.
In each such state the people, including church members and the unchurched, were engaged in a revolution against such practices that, without prodding by the federal government, led to the complete abandonment of established churches and religious tests for holding office.

War, Peace, and the State by Joseph Stromberg
The framework is a Rothbardian one, in which wars are not sealed off from domestic politics, the ambitions of state bureaucrats, economic life and motives, and ideological currents.
In this mythical world, the United States bumbles along amiably — and in utter conformity with international law and high-minded principles — for years at a time, when it is "suddenly and deliberately attacked" out of the blue, for no discernible reason, by forces of total evil.
Thus, it is no accident that libertarians — with their critical view of states and state behavior — should be among those interested in war and imperialism, both of which represent a widening of state power — first abroad, and then at home.
