The statistics of this edition are from the State census for 1885 (the last volume of which was issued in June of the present year) or from later sources, as, in part, from the clerks of the towns and cities.
The bowlders which cover the surface of the State were deposited in the glacial period, marks of which may be distinctly traced in the scratching of the ledges from the shore of the ocean to the summit of the mountains.
In the early settlement of the State, the people were greatly annoyed by the depredations of the fl and brown bear and the wolf, which ranged the deep forests, and often came by night to prey upon the cattle in the clearings.

A State Board of Health was created in 1880 (Chapter 322) to undertake a variety of health-related activities, including researching diseases and their causes; promoting public health; supervising the registration of vital statistics; and investigating the effect of localities, employment, and other conditions on public health.

The state is roughly rectangular in shape, and its extreme dimensions are about 305 km (about 190 mi) from E to W and about 180 km (about 110 mi) from N to S. Elevations range from sea level, along the Atlantic Ocean, to 1064 m (3491 ft), atop Mt. Greylock, in the NW.
The state is usually struck by several tornadoes each year; a particularly damaging tornado battered the Worcester area in 1953.
What set Massachusetts off from the other northeastern states was the emergence of a remarkably talented group of men and women who became national figures in a wide spectrum of activities, from art to literature to social reform.

In 544, Jacob Baradaeus (a Monophysite leader) consecrated Sergius of Tella as Patriarch in opposition to the Imperial-backed Orthodox candidate.
With the establishment of an independent Armenian state in Cilicia in 1058, the Armenian patriarchate was transferred to Sivas, eventually settling in the city of Sis.
During the ascendancy of the Mongols, many notable leaders, including Hulegu (the first Ilkhan), belonged to this church, and though reliable statistics are not available, it is likely that this church, whose remnants today number at most a few million, boasted the largest population of any Christian denomination.

In London, Secretary of State Lord Suffolk receives intelligence that the colony of Pennsylvania is preparing an armed fleet and floating batteries to prevent the passage of the King's ships through the Delaware River.
The Virginia Gazette carries a letter from a reader advising planters to warn their slaves that the British government are worse enemies than their masters; that if the Americans are defeated, the slaves would be sold in the West Indies; and to advise the slaves to look for an improved status in the next world.
The new Secretary of State for America, Lord Germain, informs General Howe that 20,000 soldiers were to be supplied for the spring campaign and five regiments were to be dispatched to the Carolinas by the end of November.

Knowing that in the egalitarian, post-independence era, the public would no longer permit single denominations to monopolize state support, legislators devised "general assessment schemes." Religious taxes were laid on all citizens, each of whom was given the option of designating his share to the church of his choice.
In the revised creed, adopted by the Presbyterian Church in the United States in 1788, "nursing fathers" was elevated from an explanatory footnote--(note f), as it appears here, to the body of the text in the section on the duties of the civil magistrate.
Isaac Backus (1724-1806) was the leader of the New England Baptists.
