Introduction to the Constitutional Convention by Gordon Lloyd
The states were equally represented in the union regardless of size of population, only one branch was needed, normal political activity required the support of super majorities, the union was limited to the powers expressly enumerated, and amendment was required to endow the union with powers that weren't specifically articulated.
According to Washington, "we have errors to correct." He argued that the states refused to comply with the articles of peace, the union was unable to regulate interstate commerce, and the states met, but oh so grudgingly, just the minimum interstate standards required by the Articles.
Others, especially James Madison, were concerned that the state legislatures—dominated by what he saw as oppressive, unjust, and overbearing majorities—were passing laws detrimental to the rights of individual conscience and the right to private property.

Quotations that Support the Separation of State and Church
The United States of America have exhibited, perhaps, the first example of governments erected on the simple principles of nature; and if men are now sufficiently enlightened to disabuse themselves of artifice, imposture, hypocrisy, and superstition, they will consider this event as an era in their history.
Thirteen governments [of the original states] thus founded on the natural authority of the people alone, without a pretence of miracle or mystery, and which are destined to spread over the northern part of that whole quarter of the globe, are a great point gained in favor of the rights of mankind.
In each such state the people, including church members and the unchurched, were engaged in a revolution against such practices that, without prodding by the federal government, led to the complete abandonment of established churches and religious tests for holding office.

Washington -- The United States has officially removed Iraq from its list of state sponsors of terrorism to reflect the fundamental change in the country's leadership and policies, as well as to show support for Iraq's interim government, says State Department spokesman Richard Boucher.
It was removed on October 20, when Secretary of State Colin Powell formally announced the change in the Federal Register, Boucher said during a Washington briefing October 22.
Boucher said the United States had to wait until the new Iraqi government was in place and was able to provide these assurances before formal steps could be taken to end sanctions.
