  Federalist Party (United States) Summary
In most states the congressional elections were recognized, as Jefferson strategist John Beckley put it, as a "struggle between the Treasury department and the republican interest." In New York, the race for governor was organized along these lines.
Militia officers, state's attorneys, lawyers, professors and schoolteachers were in the van of this "conscript army." In all, about a thousand or eleven hundred dependent officer-holders were described as the inner ring which could always be depended upon for their own and enough more votes within their control to decide an election.
Those states were competitive and had the best-developed local parties and most elaborate campaign techniques, including nominating conventions and formal party platforms.

 The Code Of Handsome Lake
The Iroquois tribes remaining in New York State lost much land to the Whites in dubious treaties and through corrupt land speculators; it seems likely that the Iroquois' resulting poverty informed section 95 of Gaiwiio, which warns of eternal punishment for those who sell their land.
Parker states that a Council had agreed on a standardized version of Gaiwiio which was written down by Chief John Jacket in the Seneca language; this copy was, however, lost by Chief Cornplanter once he had memorized it.
Tonawanda reservation in New York State, became the center for the Handsome Lake Religion in the late 1820's, although I have been unable to confirm this to be so for the period since 1978.

Delegates from the smaller states opposed direct election of the President because they feared that such an election would be dominated by the larger states.
The concern of the smaller states was ameliorated because most delegates firmly believed that the Electoral College would rarely produce a President; that election would ultimately be thrown to the House of Representatives where the power of the small states was guaranteed because each state, regardless of size, would have one vote.
These votes will then be certified by state authorities and sent to Washington where they will be opened and counted by the President of the Senate in the presence of all the Senators and Representatives.
