 Florida - Current Issues
The Florida State Library and Archives Division is now part of the Department of State, and is responsible for the State Library, the State Archives, state record keeping and library development services/grants programs for public libraries throughout the state.
The state Library of Florida (Bureau of Library and Network Services) is slated to close effective July 1, 2003, with the layoff of all 36 employees in that unit.
The antecedents of the State Library began with Statehood in 1845, and the creation of what became the State Library was among the first 15 acts of the new state's legislature.

With the establishment of an independent Armenian state in Cilicia in 1058, the Armenian patriarchate was transferred to Sivas, eventually settling in the city of Sis.
During the ascendancy of the Mongols, many notable leaders, including Hulegu (the first Ilkhan), belonged to this church, and though reliable statistics are not available, it is likely that this church, whose remnants today number at most a few million, boasted the largest population of any Christian denomination.

 Slavery and the Admission of California into the Union
The question of slavery extension made California an integral part of the territory of the United States; the birth, a half-century ago, of the free State of California, inflicted a mortal wound upon the enemy of human freedom.
After the admission of Texas in 1845 there were twenty-eight states, in fifteen of which slavery existed, but the admission of Iowa in 1846 and Wisconsin in 1848 restored the numerical equality between free and slave states.
New states are regularly formed by enabling acts of Congress out of territories of the United States, organized under its authority or acquired in an organized condition from foreign states.
