In 1889 a constitution was written which placed most of the powers of the state in the hands of the emperor but also established a bicameral national legislature called the Diet.
The Meiji leaders also worked to build a modern economy by acquiring new manufacturing technology and by the 1890s the beginnings of industrialization were well underway.
In 1947 a new constitution was written that stripped the emperor of much of his powers and placed the National Diet at the center of the political process.

In 1903, A.B. Storms was appointed as the sixth president of Iowa State College (University).
During his tenure, Iowa State began the Agricultural Extension Service, acquired hundreds of acres of land, developed a plan for campus landscaping and modernization of utilities, and erected eighteen new buildings.
Records Series 2/6/4: Subject Files, 1904-1910, consist of newsclippings, ephemera, and correspondence relating to a variety of issues, which include the Board of Control, Iowa State College’s (University), and the Higgins theft case that involved a rash of thefts from campus buildings during 1908 and Iowa State’s association with Pinkerton Detectives to solve the case.

FRESNO, Calif. - Oregon State picked up its first dual meet win of the wrestling season Friday evening, beating Columbia 35-7 in the first-ever meeting between two of the nation's oldest programs; the Lions began intercollegiate wrestling in 1904 and OSU in 1909.
The Beavers then dropped the finale of their non-league doubleheader to host Fresno State, losing 24-9 at the Bulldogs' North Gym.
The pin was the 14th of Bowlby's career, moving him into a tie for 44th place on OSU's list of all-time leaders; he needs three more pins to move into Oregon State's top 50 in single-season pins.

Most indentures for young girls specified only a length of time and stated that the master should “comply with the law.” When the apprenticeship was completed the girl usually received money and/or property of a pre-agreed amount and a suit of clothes.

A landing force of bluejackets and marines was sent ashore at Puerto Plata, D.R., on January 17, 1904, and returned on board same day, with the exception of the marine guard which took over the duties as consulate guard and remained on shore until Jan. 23, 1904, when it was withdrawn.
