The vice president of the United States is designated as the president of the Senate.
By 1945, most Washington observers regarded the majority leader as the Senate's functional equivalent of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, while the president pro tempore had become more of a ceremonial office.
Note: In March, 1890, the Senate adopted a resolution stating that presidents pro tempore would hold office continuously until the election of another president pro tempore, rather than being elected for the period in which the vice president was absent.

NEW YORK, one of the Middle Atlantic states of the U.S., bordered on the N by the Canadian provinces of Ontario and QuÉbec; on the E by Vermont, Massachusetts, and Connecticut; on the SE by the Atlantic Ocean; on the S by New Jersey and Pennsylvania; and on the W by Pennsylvania and Ontario.
New York was the preeminent U.S. state in commerce and manufacturing from the early 19th century until the late 1960s, when it began to be surpassed by California; in the 1990s it continued to be a leading component of the U.S. economy and remained first in many branches of economic activity.
Although not noted as a fishing state, New York ranks among the top 15 states in the U.S. in terms of the value of the annual catch, which was estimated at $51 million in the late 1980s.

 Statistics and the German State, 1900-1945: The Making of Modern Economic Knowledge
Professional economists by and large are totally unaware of the fascinating literature describing the development of the empirical approach to their subject, a literature comprising both a variety of attempts to quantify economic activities and the use of generalized economic episodes to characterize economic growth and the evolution of economic organization.
The organization of this study is essentially chronological with seven chapters plus an intriguing introduction and a conclusion that deals with the loose ends after the 1945 surrender and advances the author's view of the critical role of centralized statistical collection and analysis in giving the Nazis such total control over the Germany economy.
As Tooze reports the story of German macroeconomic planning, it is based on the insights of a series of quasi-geniuses whose capacities to envision the importance of national accounts in national economic programming were immense; their propensity to engage in careers of bureaucratic piracy was no less impressive.

However, in view of the current state of International Law, and of the elements of fact at its disposal, the Court cannot conclude definitively whether the threat or use of nuclear weapons would be lawful or unlawful in an extreme circumstance of self-defence, in which the very survival of a State would be at stake;

One finds here precise comments on the major issues of this period, such as Bismarck's critical role in creating the German state, the failure of the Revolution to produce a lasting democracy, why Weimar failed, and why the Nazis were successful in the 1930s.
Peter Pulzer states his purpose in the introduction: first, the text is meant to be a companion to his earlier work German Politics, 1945-1995.
This is clearly intended as a text on Germany, the purpose of which is to explain: 1) how the German state was built; 2) why it failed to answer the basic questions posed in the introduction; 3) why governmental structures collapsed, and 4) why the Nazis were able to rise to power.

 Quotations that Support the Separation of State and Church
The United States of America have exhibited, perhaps, the first example of governments erected on the simple principles of nature; and if men are now sufficiently enlightened to disabuse themselves of artifice, imposture, hypocrisy, and superstition, they will consider this event as an era in their history.
Thirteen governments [of the original states] thus founded on the natural authority of the people alone, without a pretence of miracle or mystery, and which are destined to spread over the northern part of that whole quarter of the globe, are a great point gained in favor of the rights of mankind.
In each such state the people, including church members and the unchurched, were engaged in a revolution against such practices that, without prodding by the federal government, led to the complete abandonment of established churches and religious tests for holding office.
