No state was hit harder than California by past base closures, losing 29 bases during the late 1980s and early 1990s, including nearly every major base in the Bay Area, from the Presidio in San Francisco to the Alameda Naval Air Station.
Ellen Tauscher, D-Walnut Creek, whose district includes Travis, said she was optimistic the base would stay off the closure list because it had been heavily involved in the military campaigns in Iraq and Afghanistan and in the tsunami relief effort in South Asia.
