Students in many states have failed to meet new state math and reading standards   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
While two-thirds of the states have yet to publish their lists of public schools that have failed to make adequate yearly progress (AYP) under the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB), lists published by 13 states show more than 6,000 students in those states have failed to meet new state math and reading standards.
Under NCLB, a school’s “average” test scores are not sufficient: states, districts, and schools have to report the progress of “sub-groups” of students, including low-income students, students with disabilities, students with limited English skills, and students from major racial and ethnic groups.
While appearing on the list for the first time carries no consequences, if a school receiving federal funds is listed for two consecutive years, NCLB requires the school to pay the transportation costs of students who want to transfer to schools not on the list.
