The bridge is decorated by a continuous alley of 30 statues and statuaries, most of them baroque-style, erected around 1700.
To sustain the bridge, tolls were taken, first by the religious order of the Knights of the Cross, that had their mother-house nearby, then by the Old Town municipality (until 1815).
The floods intensified the voices of the supporters of an overall bridge reconstruction and, as of 2005, the current repair of the pillars is considered as the first phase of the reconstruction, which will concentrate especially on building a new hydroisolation system protecting the bridge.

Charles Bridge is one of the many monuments that were built during Charles' reign but it is not the first bridge that ever connected the Prague banks of the Vltava.
The most popular statue is probably the one of St. John of Nepomuk, a Czech martyr saint who was executed during the reign of Wenceslas IV by being thrown into the Vltava from the bridge.

The bridge itself is OK; scenery around it is nice, views are nice, but not, I think, as spectacular as others have described it.
Anyway, the bridge itself is architecturally cool, and there are interesting statues lining the guard rails on both sides.
At all times the bridge is packed with tourists and vendors selling art, jewelry, etc. If you visit Prague, I'm sure you'll end up walking across this bridge anyway, but if for some reason you don't have plans to be in the area, it's definitely worth a side trip.
