The camp is located in Brzezinka (Birkenau), about 3 kilometers from Auschwitz I. The camp was designed according to the Bauhaus concept of functionalism and construction started in 1941, as part of the Endlösung.
The death toll as promoted by the communist government, however, has never been part of the calculation of the total deaths of the Holocaust by scholars, so these changes in the Polish estimates of the number of murders at the camp has not impacted the estimates of the total deaths in the Holocaust.
