The first military submarine was the Turtle, a hand-powered spherical contraption designed by American David Bushnell that accommodated a single man. During the American Revolutionary War, the Turtle attempted and failed to sink a British warship, the HMS Eagle in New York harbor on September 7, 1776.
This submarine was originally built to ease the harvest of coral.
It was the submarine of the Polish inventor Stefan Drzewiecki—50 units were built in 1881 for Russian government.

During World War II Fifty-two submarines of the United States Navy were lost during World War II.
Some 16,000 submariners served during the war, of whom 375 officers and 3131 enlisted men were killed, which is the lowest casualty rate of any combatant submarine service involved in the war.
The Submarine Veterans of World War II suggested that each of the fifty states of the United States "adopt" one submarine, except California and New York, which should adopt two.

The United States Constitution, ratified in 1789, empowered Congress "to provide and maintain a navy." Acting on this authority, Congress ordered the construction and manning of six frigates; one of the original six, USS Constitution, familiarly known as "Old Ironsides," survives to this day.
The Navy is administered by the Department of the Navy, led by the Secretary of the Navy (SECNAV).

USS Lafayette (SSBN-616), the lead ship of her class, was the second ship of the United States Navy to be named for the Marquis de la Fayette.
She was launched 8 May 1962 sponsored by First Lady of the United States Jacqueline Kennedy, wife of the 35th President of the United States, and commissioned 23 April 1963 at Groton, Connecticut, with Commander P. Hannifin in command of the Blue Crew and Commander James T. Strong in command of the Gold Crew.
Her 15th patrol, the 400th of the Polaris submarine fleet, won Lafayette special commendation from Secretary of the Navy Paul Nitze.

USS Cobia (SS/AGSS-245), a Gato-class submarine, was a ship of the United States Navy named for the cobia, a food fish found in warm waters.
By 1959, the Navy considered Cobia obsolete as a deployable warship and transferred her to the Milwaukee Naval Reserve Center.
On 1 July 1970, the Navy struck Cobia from the Naval Register, and she was towed to Manitowoc, Wisconsin to serve as an international memorial to submariners.

The second USS Gato (SSN 615) was a Thresher-class submarine known as the "Goal Keeper" or the "Black Cat." The contract to build her was awarded to the Electric Boat Division of General Dynamics Corporation on 9 July 1960 and her keel was laid down on 15 December 1961 at Groton, Connecticut.
On 15 November 1969, Gato collided with the Soviet submarine K-19 in the Barents Sea at a depth of some 200 feet.
Gato was decommissioned and stricken on 25 April 1996 and disposed of by submarine recycling.
