The word "superhero" owes its existence to the most famous superhero of all time: Superman, one of the most powerful superheroes, and the standard by which other superheroes are judged.
There are superheroes such as The Demon from DC Comics and Ghost Rider from Marvel who are actual demons from Hell who find themselves manipulated by circumstance to be allies for the forces of good.
Another notable treatment of the superhero theme in non-comics media is the television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer, where the protagonist is a dyed-in-the-wool idealist superhero (superpowers, a secret identity and supervillains come with the package) who exists in the horror genre.

 Superhero -
A superhero is a fictional character who is noted for feats of courage and nobility, who usually has a colorful name and costume and abilities beyond those of normal human beings.
Superheroes most often appear in comic books, and superhero stories are the dominant genre of American comic books, to the point that the terms "superhero" and "comic book character" are often used synonymously in North America.
Superheroes are seen as a largely an American creation but there have been successful superheroes in other countries, (and the Roman Feuilleton in 19th century France predates the American comicbook superhero by about seventy years) most of whom share the conventions of the American model.

Religion of Comic Book Characters (esp. Super-Heroes)
In addition to superheroes who are devout lay members of their religious faith (see above), there is another class of superhero: those that are actually active clergy or religious leaders.
A number of major superheroes are former clergy, former religious leaders or (in the case of former Catholic seminarian Frank Castle, the Punisher) former clergy-in-training.
Be sure to view our list of additional minor super-villains and their religious affiliations, a list which includes dozens of villains from numerous distinct religious denominations.

A lot of discussion has taken place regarding the scaling rules as presented in PRG v1.0, and I'm not sure where we left things, but I think that some modifications were made to those rules.
BTW, the other thing to consider in using AR for the superhero genre is that you'll probably want to use the low-complexity versions of damage and targetting (most likely omitting stress and fatigue).
There are at least two reasons for this: first, leaving out these rules makes combat much less hazardous (which is consistent with the "everybody's well-nigh invulnerable" style of most superhero subgenres); and second, the increased speed of resolution seems more in keeping with a fast-moving, four-color style campaign.

 Aquaman - Uncyclopedia
Aquaman is an Atlantean superhero, considered by many to be the worst superhero ever.
Although Aquaman's power is talking to fish and his weakness is air, there are many superheroes crappier than Aquaman.
His weakness to air however is still far outside the human norm, giving him that quality of uniqueness needed for him to remain a superhero, as opposed to taking employment he is more suited for, such as an aquarium salesman.

As a cultural study of superheroes it seemed like it may be a good source of interesting descriptors for superheroes.

I'm trying to compile a list of superheroes from the "mainstream continuity" universes of DC and Marvel who had their very own kids as part of their continuity from the start of their costumed careers.
Marvel might have started the trend of married superhero couples, but it took quite a while before those couples began families of their own.
I haven't seen many other married superhero couples managing to "begin families" in the sense of successfully completing pregnancies and raising their own kids who age normally and all that, even today.

 Canadian Superheroes
With the end of most original Canadian comics publishing in 1947, Canada's superheroes disappeared, and the country entered a phase of foreign domination that lasted until the early seventies.
One measure of the U.S. domination of the comics medium during the fifties and sixties is that when Canadian superheroes finally did return during the 1969-1974 period, the first characters were buffoons.
It was as if Canadian comics artists and writers recognized the absence of Canadian heroes, but could not quite – after a twenty-year diet of foreign comics – bring themselves to take such figures seriously.

BBC NEWS | Entertainment | How cinema boosted Marvel's fortunes
The key to a truly successful superhero movie is for a producer to be allowed to deliver a much more accurate portrayal which is faithful to the character and to the readers and not riddled with gaping holes as in previous adaptations.
Superheroes and fantasy epics are popular now because they offer us action and spectacle without consequence in our world: there is never a doubt in our mind that Spiderman is the good guy and the Green Goblin is the villian.
I still believe that DC's line of superheroes are better (DC quickly learned to make their heroes far more human), but I am very pleased that the huge success of the Marvel films have revived their fortunes.
