Harvard’s George Whitesides on Nanotechnology: "A Word, Not a Field
Surfaces are everything we see; they are where many properties of materials are determined, and they are what gives shape to everything.
The emphasis in surface science in the 1970s and early 80s was on studying the surface chemistry of metals, and, sometimes, metal oxides.
So by changing the organic group that you attach to the underlying substrate, you can make surfaces with polar groups and ionic groups and hydrophobic groups and groups that are resistant to the absorption of proteins and groups that attach proteins and groups that attach nucleic acids, etc. It's a very, very flexible technology.

List of mathematics lists - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The purpose of this list is not similar to that of the Mathematics Subject Classification formulated by the American Mathematical Society.
This list has some items that would not fit in such a classification, such as list of exponential topics and list of factorial and binomial topics, which may surprise the reader with the diversity of their coverage.
The publication of new discoveries in mathematics continues at an immense rate in hundreds of scientific journals, many of them devoted to mathematics and many devoted to subjects to which mathematics is applied (such as theoretical computer science and theoretical physics).

Generally this list will contain the vertex surfaces whose convex span is the set of all normal surfaces in the triangulation satisfying a particular set of constraints.
The parent element of this normal surface list must be the triangulation in which the normal surfaces lie.

The discrete catenoids are the first explicitly known discrete versions of a complete minimal surface beside the trivial plane which are critical points of the variational problem for minimizing the discrete surface area.
The Quadend surface is a candidate for a family of a periodic minimal surfaces, where the genus of the fundamental building block can be made arbitrarily large.
The hyperbolic Scherk surface is an example which generalizes in some sense the Euclidean minimal Scherk surface which is given as a minimal graph over the white fields of a checker board.

If you open the surfaces panel and the only surface name available in the list at the top of the panel (see below) is "default", then you need to return to modeler, and give each part a unique surface name (at least each part which you wish to apply a different color or texture to).
This may seem confusing -> the surface names you created in modeler are already loaded into the list of surfaces which are available to be edited; when you choose "Load Surface" you will be choosing to load color and texture settings you saved previously.
Surface "Files" (what you load when you choose the "Load Surface" option) are found in "Newtek\Surfaces\", and have the file extension "srf".

 Steiner Surfaces
The geometric properties of Steiner surfaces, including the degree and the number and type of singularities, such as pinch points, double lines, and triple points, depend on the projection from five ambient dimensions to three.
A classification of Steiner surfaces was known in the XIX century in the case where the coordinates and projective transformations are allowed to be complex.
Boy Surface is named after Werner Boy, who discovered this immersion of the real projective plane in three dimensions.

Components group surfaces and/or volumes into logical sets; as such, components may be viewed as "containers" for surfaces and/or volumes.
The center of gravity specified for the component is the CG used to compute moments for all surfaces in a given component.
A container component simply groups surfaces and/or volumes into a logical set that can be used as a part of a body, or used to report forces and moments on the set as a whole.

Surface addition and removal were deemed sufficiently low-bandwidth operations to make this approach feasible without too much of a performance penalty.
In addition, as surfaces are added or removed to/from a widget, the array needs to be reallocated, which also may cause the array itself to move around in memory.
That being said, if you're pretty certain that a widget's surface configuration isn't going to change, then the pointer method is safe (and a heck of a lot quicker, since the ID method needs to do a linear lookup in the surface array).

This means that we won't have to transform all of the points, edges, and surfaces of the model each time it moves; only the haptic interface point will need to be transformed.
Once candidate active surfaces are found, they will have to be transformed to the global coordinate frame because we may be in contact with surfaces from multiple objects at the same time.
