The Royal Navy was also vital in guarding the sea lanes that enabled British forces to fight in remote parts of the world such as North_Africa, the Mediterranean, and the Far_East.
In the latter stages of the Cold_War, the Royal Navy was reconfigured with three anti-submarine_warfare aircraft_carriers and a force of small frigates and destroyers.
The Royal Navy is established under the royal_prerogative, and the head of the Royal Navy, known as the Lord_High_Admiral, is the Queen (who is overall head of the UK_Armed_Forces).

The Coast Survey Schooner PHOENIX was a typical Coast Survey vessel used for the transportation and housing of topographic and triangulation crews during the mid-Nineteenth Century.
Clark, U.S.A., Assistant in the Coast Survey, "but the vessel was obliged to put back with loss of sails, and sustained damage, causing delay on her final passage to the south." The BOWDITCH arrived on December 13, 1857.
On June 21, 1860, the Coast Survey Steamer WALKER with a crew of 72 and the wife of Joseph Seawell, the executive officer, was lost at sea as the result of a collision.

 AGOR Numeric List
Several no longer appear on easily checked lists for the country indicated in the NVR custodian information and are presumed scrapped, sold or otherwise disposed of by their secondary owners.
The probable vessel is described in the 1968-69 Jane's as being laid down in September 1959 and launched February 1960.
A note is made that "She does not belong to the Royal Norwegian Navy, but is a Defense project." The photo shows a classic north Atlantic trawler type vessel with a whale back bow.

This is a very useful book from the National Maritime Museum Curator about sailing vessels of the Royal navy.
These annual publications include information on all enlisted personnel including surgeons and engineers and are also useful sources of information on Royal Navy ships and senior members of crew.

He describes the main types of steam and sailing vessels; wooden and iron hulls; propulsion machinery; anchors and related equipment; masts and spars; standing and running rigging, as well as sails, tackle, blocks, ropes and knots, bends, hitches and splices.
From haunted houses to men who have lost their heads and the "real Mark Hopkins", the authors have gathered a collection of stories dedicated to "people who believe a little bit in everything." They included an ancient Indian legend that tells of the great bird with white wings that died and was buried shifting sands.
The list includes the number of passengers and sometimes the number of crew, but not their names.

Most recently, Dr. Emery directed the excavation, removal, and stabilization of mortal remains representing two sailors from the gun turret of the USS Monitor, the prototype ironclad of the Union Navy that sank during the U.S. Civil War.
He is particularly interested in using historical information on the characteristics of manufacture of aeronautical vessels to classify, identify, and interpret evidence of aircraft wrecks encountered in archaeological and forensic contexts.
