Television | Topic Definition | Find the Meaning and Define the Answer of Television
The earliest television sets were radios with the addition of a television device consisting of a neon tube with a mechanically spinning disk (the Nipkow disk, invented by Paul Gottlieb Nipkow) that produced a red postage-stamp size image.
Television in its original and still most popular form involves sending images and sound over radio waves in the VHF and UHF bands, which are received by a receiver (a television set).
Paralleling television's growing primacy in family life and society, an increasingly vocal chorus of legislators, scientists and parents is raising objections to the uncritical acceptance of the medium.

Glen Charles and Les Charles the creators of Cheers started their careers in television by writing "The Late Captain Pierce" (episode 404) and being lucky enough to submit it "on spec" and have it produced.

 Television: History and Production
For many programs -- The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet (1944-1954), Father Knows Best (1949-1954), Dragnet (1949-1956) -- the transition was easy: the cast performed in a television or film studio instead of a radio station.
A half hour filmed television show required the actor to be in front of the camera for three or four, 10 to 12 hour days.
It has been said that Berle was television's first great "salesman." During his tenure the number of TV homes went from a little under 191,000 to over 21,000,000, an increase of approximately 10,994%.

 TNO June 1996
This month's wish list sketches a family of programs and data conventions for building and maintaining professional networks.
Once my list had about 2000 subscribers and two years of happy operation behind it, I could rely on the subscribers for my primary source of good stuff to send to the list.
Likewise, the universal event calendar that I wished for in TNO 3(4)could refer to the web object for whoever is speaking in a given event, and people with relationships to that person in that geographic area could be notified automatically of upcoming speaking engagements.

Television milestones   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-11)
From the earliest days of primetime television, reaching 100 installments for a series has proved the benchmark -- the number that separates the heralded from the unheralded, the great from the merely good, the real deals from the ordeals.
Since the industry started keeping tabs on these things in 1947, 296 scripted network comedies and dramas have made it to at least the 100-episode milestone in broadcast primetime.
But as the massive list of comedies and dramas to have reached the magic 100 figure underscores, viewers will always watch shows whose characters and story lines they have taken a liking to week after week, year after year.

Peer Resources: A Comprehensive List of Mentor Programs
The goals of the program are to help students stay in school, bring education to the workplace and the workplace to education, help the partner become a productive member of the community, and assist the partner to develop a sense of self-esteem and ability to make choices.
This program is based on providing five fundamental resources to at-risk youth: a one-on-one relationship with a caring adult; a safe places to learn and grow; a healthy start; marketable skills through education; and an opportunity to give back.
The program includes an 18 month facilitated learning relationship between a mentor and a mentee; a central coordinator who assists in matching mentors and mentees, mentorship training for all participants, career planning workshops for mentees, monthly correspondence from the program coordinator on topics of interest, and a bi-annual mentorÕs networking breakfast.

Critics scrambled for superlatives to praise the program, predicting wonderfully wicked doings for one of the most daringly original TV characters in recent years.
Television viewers have endured quick cancellation periods in the past - the late 1970s, when ABC and Fred Silverman ruled the tube, come to mind - although some doubt the medium has hit such a slide again.
They point to recent renewals of such programs as ABC's "Murder One" and NBC's "Homicide: Life on the Street" as evidence that quality, not ratings, is sometimes enough to sustain a program from season to season.

Not that there wasn't a great deal of writing about television before then; it is merely that most writing was about the medium of television in a somewhat sociological/anthropological mode rather than in a textual analysis mode.
Many earlier television scholars were as or more apt to write about the interaction of shows and commercials embedded within them as the shows themselves.
In fact, while Thompson was lamenting what he imagined to be end of television's second golden age, what he was writing about was a group of shows that laid the foundation for an even better group of shows in the nineties and our decade.

 The Krofft Oeuvre
Another series of programs that caught the attention of Gen X youngsters were those from prolific producers Sid and Marty Krofft.
Another popular Krofft program was "The Krofft Supershow" (ABC, 1976-1978; renamed "The Krofft Superstar Hour" for NBC in 1978), which was hosted by a rock group called Kaptain Kool (played by Michael Lembeck) and the Kongs.
In 1995 the Kroffts entered into an agreement with Walt Disney Pictures to bring their TV shows to the big screen, starting with "The Land of the Lost." "H.R. Pufnstuf" is expected to be the second Krofft property to get remade as a movie, while a new "Bugaloos" TV show is in development at Fox.

The book is half critical evaluation of these programs and half insider's tour looking at the decision-making process as well as the social, economic, and artistic forces that ended up revolutionizing the medium.
Thompson also more than adequately proves he knows his television history, which is necessary to help convince those of us who are true students of the medium.
Consequently, the fact that the title of this book is not a fair representation of its most significant claim, is not to be held against the author, because he has made in public an argument I have been making in private (okay, in class as well), for several years.
