One of the strongest aspects of this song is that it starts out with a bunch of notes, and then cuts to a completely different tone right at the beginning and the continues strong for a good while.

How a song about a guy who's relationship with his woman has gone sour who wants to get back to the way things used to be is supposed to help sell cars is beyond me. But the song is very good, yes.
This song is about a man who has to leave before the constant rain breaks the levee (dam, dyke, underwater wall, etc.) and destroys his home.
Perhaps the song is a metaphor about how the guy is overloaded with strife, and when he finally has too much of that, he'll lose it, and he'll have to leave.

Regarding the theme song for National Geographic, there were no lyrics written for the original version (which was composed by Elmer Bernstein).
Judy Roberts recorded the theme to the Star Trek TV series with lyrics by Gene Roddenberry on an LP titled "You Are There." The album was released by Pausa Records around 1985.
The Lyrics were written by Zippel after the film was made, but Zippel clearly was inspired by it, as the last verse points out.

 Flying Omelette's Favorite Video Game Ending Songs Part 3
This is one of the few songs on this list that's from a game I haven't actually finished, but I did play about halfway through it, and thus was able to recognize some of the overworld themes remixed into this wonderful composition.
Most of the lyrics are sung in Latin, while the rest appear to be a made-up language.
It's very short, but short songs that are excellent are a rarity, as it's difficult to compose something very catchy and memorable in less than a minute's worth of time.

When I was a kid my parents got this six-LP set of science-themed folk songs for my sister and me. They were produced in the late 1950s / early 1960s by Hy Zaret (William Stirrat) and Lou Singer.
Zaret's main claim to fame is writing the lyrics to the classic "Unchained Melody" for the 1955 movie "Unchained", later recorded by the Righteous Brothers and more recently used in "Ghost".
The Singing Science lyrics were very Atomic Age, while the tunes were generally riffs on popular or genre music of the time.
