 Lucky Number 7 for "Titanic" - Feb 01, 1998 - E! Online News
Other debuting movies making the Top 10 list were Michael Keaton's thriller Desperate Measures ($5.8 million in sixth) and the sci-fi Deep Rising ($4.6 million in eighth).

After Hitchcock's classic films of the 1950s, his films were wildly uneven, although he produced the shocking and engrossing thriller Psycho (1960) with the classic set piece (the 'shower scene') and the suspenseful and strangely terrifying The Birds (1963) about a invasion of birds in a N. California coastal town.
AFI's list of the 100 Most Thrilling Films are presented by this site.
In Hitchcock's films, the main character(s) usually committed a crime or was caught as a victim of circumstance, from which there was the inevitable life and death chase concluding with a showdown at a familiar landmark (for example, London's Albert Hall, the Statue of Liberty, or Mount Rushmore).

 Chinese Movies
In the past decade mainland filmmakers have produced or co-produced with Hong Kong sponsors dozens of these fast-action movies from " Shaolin Temple" and" Chivalrous 13th Sister" in the early 1980s to more recent ones like" The Magic Whip"," Golden Dart King" and" Grave Robbers." Thriller films are also becoming great favorites.
The list includes all the major films that have won international or national awards in the past four decades as well as classics from the 1920s to 1940s.
The opera films gave way to modern drama films in the '30s and '40s, made by second generation artists as Yuan Muzhi and Tang Xiaodan, all former stage directors.

Thomas Hibbs on Children's Movies on National Review Online
A final oddity in the BFI list is the relative absence of British films, especially when one considers how many solid British films have been based on superb British dramas and novels, from Shakespeare to Austen and beyond.
A number of the films, for example, The Bicycle Thief and The 400 Blows, would likely make any list of, say, top 100 international films, but it's not clear these are the best pedagogical films for children.
Last summer, the BFI put out a top-ten (and then 50) list that includes a Danish film (Show Me Love, released in some countries as F***ing Amal) featuring experimental lesbian teen sex and an American noir thriller (The Night of the Hunter) about children fleeing a murderous, psychotic preacher.

slant // magazine forums - No Missy Elliot, Busta Rhymes, TLC?!
(No serious cinephille takes any list by AFI seriously, but any serious cinephille would be foolish to think that there aren't some good films on these lists.) Madge's videos and Michael Jackson's "Thriller" didn't make the list because they're popular; they made the list because they're good (there's deep meaning to their aesthetics).
I feel like I've explained the absence of "Waterfalls" a million times already, but here goes: I like "Waterfalls" and it was in contention but compromises were made (I'm not the only one who created the list) and the video just simply didn't make the cut.
Just because someone says they want to present a list that's an alternative doesn't mean that said alternative won't include selections that are more "populist" in nature.

deseretnews.com - Movie review: 187 Deseret Morning News Web edition
The genre actually began and peaked with 1955's "The Blackboard Jungle," but is currently enjoying a renaissance, due to films like "Stand and Deliver" and "Dangerous Minds." But less-original creations like the thriller "The Substitute" and the unfunny parody "High School High" offer proof that it may be tapped out permanently.
Add "urban school drama" to the quickly growing list of movie genres that should be temporarily retired, if not permanently put to sleep.
To his credit, Jackson almost saves the movie single-handedly, and for that — if not the remainder of his work — he deserves more than just one chance in a starring role.

Michael Mann is officially my favorite filmmaker now, and its his relaxed and honest approach to the high concept thriller genre that seals it for me. Shot on digital video and set almost exclusively to the confines of a taxi cab, his film is as good at quiet conversations as it is at gunplay.

Horn's episode, along with a later Harlan Ellison, is often cited as the source of the concepts for the Terminator films.
Looking at the long list of titles, I can't help but feel that MGM would have done better splitting the season in half, with perhaps six episodes per disc instead of eight.
Thriller, The Twilight Zone and The Alfred Hitchcock Show had earlier been deemed too adult, weird or scary for Savant ever since I'd had nightmares after seeing an episode of One Step Beyond.

Dan Heller's Photos/Pictures of Movie Plot Twists: An Analysis
While movie audiences are filling theaters and movie rentals houses to watch suspense films for the fun-filled about-face turn-around at the end, the method that the filmmakers are using to tickle the audience is based on a short-sighted formula that may not have legs if not done more carefully.
He spends the movie in search of the meaning of life, and as aliens land on Earth to threaten our very existence, his true faith is put to the test.
That's fun, but the movie implies, if not only by screen time, that the "main character" is one of the personalities of the film that seems to care more about solving the mystery than the other characters do.
