 Trick-taking game: Encyclopedia topic
Trick-taking games are card game (card game: A game played with playing cards) s with a distinct and common play structure: Each round of play is divided into units called tricks, during which each player selects one card from his or her hand.
Trick-taking games are usually classified, firstly, according to the objective of the players.
During each trick, every player puts one card from his or her hand into play-- there is no option of playing multiple cards, or of abstaining from the trick.

Games in which a player can play multiple cards in the same trick, such as The Great Dalmuti, Tichu, etc. I'd be interested to see, and link to, a web page devoted to such games.
The distinctive things about this game are: the phase that happens before you declare which of your tiles you are going for; and the role of the player "in the know." For reasons that will become obvious, this role rotates from hand to hand.

Relationship Tightrope review, by Tom Vasel
Sometimes taking a lot of sticks is a good thing, as long as you know that you can get rid of them all.
The game was fairly simple to teach; although I usually play through a couple of rounds, because I found that some new folk have a hard time grasping how the different colored sticks cancel each other out.

Mit List und Tuecke: a Board Game Review
Suffice it to say that this is a 4-suited trick-taking game for 4-6 players in which the first card led forms the trump suit for that trick, the high trumper takes 2 cards of his choice while the low card player takes the remainder and must lead.
The chief downside to the game may be the relatively small amount of control a player has over his own destiny, precisely because of this giving up of the lead and the ability of other players to collectively deliver up negative cards to the trick leader.
In addition, the nature of the game seems to cause players, at least our players, to spend a lot of time considering their options, which runs counter to expectation in a card game and may be generate unwelcome waiting periods.

James carries around a crate of games and is very willing to play and teach them - being in fact one of the best teachers of games I have ever had the pleasure of meeting.
Finally, players take any cards they had left in their hands (if the other team ran out of cards first), divide it by four, and add that to their total.
This game is an amazing first effort from James, not only are the rules well designed and playtested, the components are also very nicely done - it looks very professional.

For example in a trick taking game it is easier to have all one's cards of the same suit together, whereas in a rummy game one might sort them by rank or by potential combinations.
An exception to this may be made in games with fixed partnerships, in which it may be felt that the partner(s) of the person who broke a rule should also not benefit.
That person takes all of the cards in the pack, stacks them together so that they are all the same way up and the same way round, and shuffles them.
