The navy was a part of the conflict from the very beginning of American involvement to the very end of the war, and proved to be a vital element in the success of the Allies.
The Navy is administered by the Department of the Navy, led by the Secretary of the Navy (SECNAV).
Current plans in the United States Navy call for keeping the battleships on the NVR until the naval surface fire support gun and missile development programs achieve operational capability, which is expected to occur sometime between now and 2008.

She was struck from the Navy list on 26 February 1946 and sold, on 5 December 1947, to Bosey, Philippines.
Upon her return to the United States, she was decommissioned on 19 November 1945 and struck from the Navy list on 5 December 1945.

His command being obliterated in the subsequent naval operations, he was detached and retired in the rank of admiral in July 1942.
