This list of Swedish universities and university colleges is based on the Higher Education Ordinance of 1993 (as amended until January 2006).
All higher education in Sweden is publicly funded, but the listing also include the officially recognized independent higher education institutions that operate under contract with the Swedish Ministry of Education, Research and Culture.
University qualities are not defined in law or ordinance, but have traditionally included the existence of at least four faculties, considerable undergraduate education as well as an important research activity and quaternary education.
