Mercury's surface is very similar in appearance to that of the Moon, showing extensive mare-like plains and heavy cratering, indicating that it has been geologically inactive for billions of years.
Mercury's orbit is inclined by 7° to the plane of Earth's orbit (the ecliptic), as shown in the diagram on the left.
Mercury's precession showed the effects of mass dilation, providing a crucial observational confirmation of one of Einstein's theories—Mercury is slightly heavier at perihelion than it is at aphelion because it is moving faster, and so it slightly "overshoots" the perihelion position predicted by Newtonian gravity.

  Mercury (planet)
Mercury ranges from –0.4 to 5.5 in apparent magnitude; Mercury is sufficiently "close" to the Sun that telescopes rarely examine it.
The atoms that compose Mercury's atmosphere are continually being lost to space, with the average "lifespan" of a potassium or sodium atom being approximately ~3 hours (during the Mercurian day—and only half that at perihelion).
One theory suggests that Mercury originally had a metal-silicate ratio similar to common chondrite meteors and a mass approximately 2.25 times its current mass, but that early in the solar system's history Mercury was struck by a planetesimal of approximately 1/6 that mass.

Mercury ranges from −0.4 to 5.5 in apparent magnitude; Mercury is sufficiently "close" to the Sun that telescopes rarely examine it (the greatest elongation is 28.3°).
Mercury's rotation is also remarkable in that it has an axial tilt of only 0.01 degrees, which is over 300 times smaller than Jupiter's axial tilt (the second smallest axial tilt of all planets at 3.1 degrees).
In both of these cases, the angle Mercury strikes with the ecliptic is maximized, allowing it to rise several hours before the Sun in the former instance and not set until several hours after sundown in the latter in countries located at South Temperate Zone latitudes, such as Argentina and New Zealand.

Mercury ranges from −0.4 to 5.5 in apparent magnitude, and its greatest angular separation from the Sun (greatest elongation) is only 28.3°, meaning it is only ever seen in twilight.

 Mercury (planet) Summary
Mercury is a transition metal, one of the elements found in the middle of the periodic table in Rows 4, 5, and 6 between Groups 2 and 3.
The mean surface temperature of Mercury is 452 K, but it ranges from 90 K to 700 K; by comparison, the temperature on Earth varies by only about 150 K. The sunlight on Mercury's surface is 6.5 times as intense as it is on Earth, with a solar constant value of 9.13 kW/m².
Mercury is much too small for its gravity to retain any significant atmosphere over long periods of time, but it does have a very tenuous atmosphere containing hydrogen, helium, oxygen, sodium, calcium and potassium.

The orbit of Mercury is eccentric, ranging from 46–70 million kilometres in radius; only Pluto among all planets has a more eccentric orbit.
Unlike Venus, however, Mercury is brightest as seen from Earth when it is at a "gibbous" phase; that is to say, between half full and full (by contrast, Venus is brightest when it is between new and half full).

Mercury (0.39 AU ftom the Sun): The closest planet to the Sun is also the smallest and most atypical of the inner planets, having no atmosphere and, to date, no observed geological activity save that produced by impacts.
Its surface, peppered with vast volcanoes and rift valleys such as Valles Marineris, shows that it was once geologically active and recent evidence suggests it may have continued to be so until very recently.
Venus and Mercury were each identified as single objects despite the difficulty of connecting "evening" and "morning stars".

 Mercury Policy Project
At the outset, mercury body burden was measured in pregnant women and in their newborn infants, and the health status and neurological development of the children have been assessed at intervals since birth.
Nevertheless, the children’s postnatal mercury exposure was correlated with latency in neural signal transmission in the midbrain, suggesting that postnatal mercury exposure may damage different neural functions than those affected by prenatal exposure.
At higher levels of (mainly prenatal) mercury exposure, regulation of heart rate variability was weaker, confirming a finding by the same investigators when they examined the study population at the age of 7 years.
