Vanilla Bean History - Vanilla Beans
Vanilla is widely used for its flavor in baked goods and for its fragrance in soaps, lotions, and candles.
Vanilla cuttings were soon taken to the neighboring islands of Madagascar, Comoro and Santa Maria and by 1898 about 200 tons had been produced by the French colonies.
Vanilla harmonizes very well with many other flavors and is used not only as stand-alone flavor, but also as a component of a complex flavor profile.

Vanilla - free-definition   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Vanilla is either a genus of orchid or the flavoring, in its pure form known as vanillin, derived from that orchid.
Vanilla was a well regarded flavoring in Pre-Columbian Mesoamerica, and was brought back to Europe (and from there the rest of the world) by the Spanish Conquistadors.
The leaves of the vanilla are thick and leathery, even fleshy in some species, though there are a significant number of species that have become nearly or totally leafless and appear to use their green climbing stems for photosynthesis.

 The Origin of Species
The Origin of Species (full title On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, or the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life) by British naturalist Charles Darwin is one of the hallmark works of biology.
Darwin presents a theory of evolution that is, except concerning the inheritance of traits acquired by education in which he still believes (see discussion page), almost identical to the theories now accepted by scientists.
He carefully argues out this theory of evolution of species by natural selection by presenting all the accumulated scientific evidence from his voyage on the HMS Beagle in the 1830s.

Vanilla, the second most expensive spice, is cultivated in the Pacific Islands and Indian Ocean Islands, but the recent emergence of several virus diseases has adversely affected production.
Together with the considerable hand work required in vanilla crops (hand pollination of flowers, collection and preparation of beans) and the arrival on the market of synthetic substitutes, viral diseases have contributed to the loss of motivation among growers, resulting in a great diminution of the production over the past 20 years.
