Defensive wall - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Generally, these are referred to as city walls or town walls, although there were also walls, such as the Great Wall of China and the Atlantic Wall, which extended far beyond the borders of a city and were used to enclose vast regions.
The practice of building these massive walls, though having its origins in perhistory, was refined during the rise of city-states, and energetic wall-building continued into the medieval period and beyond in certain parts of Europe.
The city of Xi'an has well-preserved walls with a water filled moat that is a tourist attraction incorporating small parks surrounding a busy and modern area of the city.

The list has been fortunate to count among its membership a number of people who are interested not only in the sport of flyfishing but who have also been involved with the camaraderie of the list and who have cared to provide direction and focus, no mean feat with an unmoderated public list.
In addition to the list itself, the membership has created a "companion web page" (http://www.uky.edu/~agrdanny/flyfish/main.htm) with not only the standard list subscription information, but also including such diverse topics as book reviews, reading lists, surveys and polls, river etiquette, conclave schedules and access to the list archives.
The list owner periodically posts messages stating the rules that are accepted by the bulk of list members.

Local Heritage Initiative - Restoration of the Dry Stone Walls
in the Chalford Area
The drystone walls of Gloucestershire villages at Chalford, Chalford Hill and France Lynch were the focus of a successful pilot project established to test the feasibility of the Local Heritage Initiative as a grant programme.
The group surveyed the walls, many of which date from the 17th century, and used standard forms supported by photographs to record the very distinctive architectural features of the walls, and arranged for their survey to be archived in the County Records Office at Gloucester.
The survey identified a priority list of walls for repair and the next stage was to encourage property owners to take care of their own walls.

UKC Databases - About the walls list
One of the most frequently-asked questions on the newsgroup uk.rec.climbing is "Are there any climbing walls in London/Sheffield/Exeter/Bude/etc?" Which suggests that (1) people have trouble finding climbing walls in their area (they're not in Yellow Pages, you know); and (2) they often use the Internet to try to find them.
Clearly then a database of UK climbing walls on the Internet could be really useful in helping people find facilities in or near the area where they live or work.
The UK Climbing list of indoor walls was originally based on the list published in On The Edge magazine in November 1994, used with their permission.
