Chopin died, officially, of tuberculosis in 1849, although there is some speculation that he may have had another disease such as cystic fibrosis or emphysema due in part to autopsy findings (reported only by his sister) seemingly inconsistent with the initial diagnosis.
Chopin's music for the piano combined a unique rhythmic sense, particularly his use of rubato, chromatic inflections, the style of Bach—as well as a piano technique which was of his own creation.
Chopin once claimed that he was using the piano to re-create the gradefulness of the singing voice, and often stated that his greatest influences were Donizetti and Bellini.

The list of his compositions is so prolific in mazurkas, waltzes, polonaises and other forms of national dance music that it is sometimes difficult to believe that they are so often the expression of a deeply melancholy nature seeming paradox, yet explained by Chopin's nationality, a nationality which has been justly described as sadness personified.

Alexander Brailowsky´s performance of the fourteen Chopin waltzes seems to be among the definitive versions.
His waltzes truly aren´t visionary, nor are they relfective, nor are they nostalgic (all of which describe the waltzes of Rachmaninov, Geza Anda, and Garrick Ohlsson), but they are brilliant- in the sense that he plays them very brightly (at least when appropiat), and with a light touch.
This opinion, on the waltzes, can be stated by a quote from Chopin himself-"My waltzes are not for dancing!" Rachmaninov believed Chopin´s waltzes should be liberated from their titles, and withdrawn from their playing in salons, and Garrick Ohlsson approached them as if they were nocturnes.
