In all cases, deities are understood as means for liberation and the enlightenment of all.
For example, although a female deity such as Ushnishavijaya is known as a bestower of longevity, her purpose is not simply as a personal protector, but as a way to liberate numberless individuals via the extended life of just one.
Buddhist teachers of all schools stress that all such deities are to be thought of as embodiments of wisdom and compassion, not separate from the practitioner or meditator, and ultimately empty of any inherent qualities.

The Internet Classics Archive | The History of the Peloponnesian War by Thucydides
The course of war cannot be foreseen, and its attacks are generally dictated by the impulse of the moment; and where overweening self-confidence has despised preparation, a wise apprehension often been able to make head against superior numbers.
For the misfortunes of the state did not arise from the unlawful occupation, but the necessity of the occupation from the war; and though the god did not mention this, he foresaw that it would be an evil day for Athens in which the plot came to be inhabited.
Even during the levying of the war he had credit for weakness and Athenian sympathies by the half measures he had advocated; and after the army had assembled he had further injured himself in public estimation by his loitering at the Isthmus and the slowness with which the rest of the march had been conducted.

Notes on James Hillman's The Terrible Love of War Conference, November 2002
When she is allied with war (Ares), this indicates that violence in war has to be orderly and has to go by the book lest it run amuck and explode into pure rage.
Maybe she frankly hated war and hated that war perverted beauty and love for its own ends -- but Ares, ah, he was unique, untrained in the ways of love, and thus a splendid challenge for her.
Hillman introduced it by saying that the Civil War was the wounding of American innocence; he also said he wanted to be the therapist to the nation, not just to individuals.

 Greyhawk Deities Expanded Domain List
There is a bug in the domain lists for the deities presented in the Living Greyhawk Gazetteer--some deities don't have the alignment domains listed for all components of their alignment (I'm not talking about the parenthetical alignment tendency, I'm talking about the actual alignment).
That's because when I wrote that part of the book, the rule "all deities grant the alignment domains of their own alignment components" hadn't been written yet, or at least hadn't been circulated among the RandD staff at WotC (the LGG was written while the 3E DandD rules were still in development).
So when I wrote the deities, I assigned them the domains I felt they should have, and only deities strongly associated with a particular alignment ethos actually got that alignment domain.
