List of DC Comics Universes - Uncyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
Due to numerous continuity errors, retcons and non-canonical storylines, the universe portrayed in the comic books of DC Comics had to be treated by writers and fans as a massive multiverse of universes to prevent the whole shebang from collapsing into a lump of gibberish and fart jokes.
What follows is the definitive (although still incomplete) list of universes that existed in the DC Comics Multiverse before the writers Did Something About It.

British Comics Collection: The British Library Newspaper Library
Comics which were designed primarily for children were not published until the early years of the twentieth century, the first being the Rainbow (1914-1956), although Puck (1904-1940), which began as an adult comic, gradually came to be aimed at a much younger readership.
The 1930s were undoubtedly the golden age of the comic, with a large number of titles in publication ranging from Tiny Tots (1927-1959), aimed at the 'nursery market', to Crackers (1929-1941) for older children.
What makes the Dandy, for example, stand out from the myriad other comic titles which have been published this century is not only its longevity but the wealth of characters it introduced who have transcended their existence on the page and become national figures.

Where lists become valuable is on a more engaged, give-and-take level -- the debate that precedes the much slower and less controllable process of pantheon building to which many critics take offense.
Lists allow the person making them to take the temperature of their own tastes, and to think of their chosen medium of interest for the forest rather than the trees, on the whole rather than work by work.
This specific list was useful to me in that I'm becoming more comfortable with the greatness of comics that is not exactly literary greatness, a notion I'm still worried is a capitulation to comics that bring me pleasure rather than those that provide compelling art, but one to which I seem forced to return.

Note: A character having a "secret identity" is not enough to qualify the comic as a transformation work (mostly because if it were, half the comics in creation would be listed, and what's the point of that?) In general, transformation should be a significant theme of the comic in order to list it here.

Arthurian comic books were produced in greater numbers during the 1950s and 1960s, including several appearances by Arthurian characters in the books of new publisher Marvel Comics.
While predominantly a concern of comic book writers and artists, creators of comic strips also contributed to the growth of the corpus during this period, and Arthurian elements appeared in Dilbert, The Far Side, Frank and Ernest and Hagar the Horrible.
