  Film List
It is a beautiful film that will fit into many thematic units as well as providing thought provoking glimpses into the aftermath of perhaps the most frightening decision of the century.
The film also portrays everyday life of the grandmother in a traditional country house and contrasts it with that of her blue-jeaned grandchildren.
The film has classic themes: the helplessness of the poor, the nobility of honorable men, the clash between the selfishness of evil men and the generosity of good men, the tenderness of young love, the willingness to die for others.

The Vatican Film List: Ten Years Later
Later that year, the pontifical commission provided an important reference point to Catholics interested in assessing the cinema’s “many worthwhile productions during the first hundred years of its existence”: a list of 45 films that has come to be known as the Vatican film list.
Titled simply “Some Important Films,” the list is simply a cross section of outstanding films, chosen by a committee of twelve international movie scholars appointed by the head of the pontifical commission, Archbishop John Foley.
Thus, the films listed in, for instance, the “Values” category possess special moral worth, but that doesn’t mean that they are perfect even with respect to moral content — and certainly not with respect to religious or artistic significance.

Thinking about how that film's end titles entailed the most eloquent, concise, and chilling example of the film-long equation of zombies with dead-eyed consumerism, the idea of compiling a list of other great thematic "thesis statements" became an attractive one.
Ultimately, I decided to head for the opposite end of the chronological spectrum, because while the best opening title sequences establish and epitomize their films' worlds and intentions, they also represent the screenwriters' and filmmakers' eagerness to snatch up the soonest possible opportunity to subdue the viewer with the elusive magic that is cinema.
The film pretty much loses its thin argument for detente in its rushed crawl for the big finale, and the titles are just another spot where Western-Soviet relations are given lip service and then pushed aside for the sex and violence.
