Zoo - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A zoological garden, zoological park, or zoo is an institution where mainly wild and exotic animals are restricted within enclosures, bred and displayed to the public.
Many zoos now have special buildings for nocturnal animals, with dim red lighting during the day, so the animals will be active when visitors are there, and bright lights at night to ensure that they sleep.
Contemporary criticisms relating to the use of zoos during the New Imperialism period have been registered, denouncing cases where indigenous people were displayed in cages along with animals in an attempt to illustrate and demonstrate scientific racism thesis.

Topping IDA's list and taking the title of Worst Zoo in America for Elephants for the second year in a row is the Alaska Zoo, where miserable Maggie lives a solitary existence in an artificially lit concrete cell, the only one of her species in the state.
While the Zoo faces funding struggles for a cost prohibitive and still inadequate new elephant exhibit, two elephants are being warehoused in a tiny "temporary" facility that is off limits to the public and that a city report deemed insufficient for long-term holding of elephants.
The Zoo was hit with a $10,000 fine in 2005 after the death of a 4-day old Asian elephant, with federal inspectors saying the Zoo improperly handled the calf.

Help for Endangered Species at Super Zoos & Aquariums
Zoos displayed a dispirited collection of animals and birds in cages and other small enclosures.
So zoos shuffled their animals into larger groups that, in combination with the move away from barred enclosures, improved reproduction rates.
Nothing wrong with that; it's certain that traditional zoos and aquariums move towards entertainment as their public funding dries up just as the above attractions move towards conservation and education as they realize this is good business, as well as a good ideal.
