 LIVERPOOL – MARITIME MERCANTILE CITY
The Albert Dock - the largest collection of Grade One Listed Buildings in the country - is the most popular attraction in Liverpool and is the home of Tate Liverpool, the Merseyside Maritime Museum and the Beatles Story.
The Leeds and Liverpool Canal was finally completed to Stanley Dock in 1848 and it was the longest single canal in England and also the most profitable.
Many of these docks incorporated innovative and pioneering technological ideas that were later copied and adopted in ports around the world including: the construction of dockside warehousing, the internal linking of dock systems, the fireproof construction of warehouses and the first installation of hydraulic cargo handling machinery.
