ORB - Men Behind the Masque - Monopolisation of Office
Monopolisation of office by an elite has been a corner-stone in the argument that medieval borough government was oligarchic in character.
And what yardstick does the historian have to say that an individual is monopolising a certain office if he holds it more than once, or twice, or three times...?[2] Given this, it will be understood that the interpretation presented here cannot help but be open to challenge as personal opinion.
Certainly we can distinguish a few men who were in office frequently and for continuous periods; but do we judge the whole by the few?

Roman Emperor - Voyager, the free encyclopedia
The nature of the Imperial office and the Principate was established under Julius Caesar's heir and posthumously adopted son, Caesar Augustus, and his own heirs, the descendants of his wife Livia from her first marriage to a scion of the distinguished Claudian clan.
The office of princeps senatus, however, was not a magistracy and did not own imperium; in terms of the modern Westminster system, this is approximately comparable to diplomatic agents being accredited to the Leader of the House (the consuls functioned as a sort of hybrid between the Speaker of the House and the Prime Minister).

 Office-Holders Introduction
In 1972 the Institute of Historical Research began publication of a series of lists of office-holders entitled Office Holders in Modern Britain.
The lists, which are largely confined to the post-medieval offices of the English central government, are 'provisional' in the sense that the compiler is conscious that they are not definitive and could, in many cases, be improved by further research.
Sir John Sainty has compiled the following provisional list of office holders which can be accessed by clicking on one of the links above.

 Office-Holders: Custodes Rotulorum
The purpose of the following lists is to illustrate the process whereby the offices of lieutenant and custos rotulorum of the counties of England and Wales, except for Durham and Lancashire, came to be concentrated in the same hands.
In order to indicate in each case when the assimilation took place the holders of the office of custos are listed alphabetically by county, first for England and then for Wales, from 1660 to the date from which the two offices have invariably been held concurrently.
The office of custos was of much greater antiquity than that of lieutenant which became a permanent feature of county government only from the latter part of the sixteenth century.
