  Lists and strings
This structure is unified with a list, X is bound to the first element of the list, called the head.
List predicates all follow a similar strategy--try something with the first element of a list, then recursively repeat the process on the rest of the list.
The recursive condition states that if list X is appended to list [TQ1], then the head of the new list is also H, and the tail of the new list is the result of appending X to the tail of the first list.

List Elements: Extracting the pieces of a list.
Association lists are often used to record information that you might otherwise keep on a stack, since new associations may be added easily to the front of the list.
Property lists are used to represent the properties associated with various sorts of objects, such as symbols, strings, frames, etc. The convention is that property lists can be modified in-place, while association lists generally are not.

A list can be thought of as a head and a tail list, whose head is the second element and whose tail is a list whose head is the third element, and so on.

Web Design Forums.net - How to Create Powerful Content with Lists
Lists allow you to display information in an ordered fashion by dissecting the content of your site into smaller, more legible pieces.
Lists have been used in advertising for years, and are proven to increase readership.
However, unordered lists are less effective in increasing readership, because they lack the numbering of ordered lists (which further organizes the text).

In practice it is also convenient to specify paths as two or more lists that get logically concatenated within a command, to represent a "base location" (the first list) and "location relative to the base" (the second list).
This includes the "filler" elements: for example, if listvar contained a list of one element and the path starts with "5...", the elements with indexes 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 will all be created and the the further creation within the element at index 5 will proceed.
Also when experimenting with large lists from the command line, returning the value that is a large list itself would cause a long and unpleasant printout of it.

The baseline algorithm is simply to send a copy of the shortest posting list to the machines that have the other, larger posting lists, then winnow it by filtering out items that don't occur in the larger posting lists; repeat until the results are small enough in aggregate to send them to the client.
The number of machines you need to make this happen is roughly half of the square of the number of pieces you have to divide the index into, which is just the ratio between the index size and the size of an individual machine's storage.
Two randomly chosen posting lists will have about one machine out of ten thousand in common, so the number of machines needs to be a few times larger than that to ensure that at least one machine will have a copy of both posting lists.
