Topic: Lists of string quartets

classical music - andante - beethoven: string quartets nos. 7, 8 and 9 ('rasumovsky' quartets); no. 10 ('harp')
The Takács Quartet begin in the middle of what is to be a complete set of the Beethoven string quartets.
The playing is of the highest standard: exuberant, yet also alive to the softest, tenderest gradations; tempos are well chosen and finely sustained; there is a strong sense of direction; all four musicians are equally adept at taking the lead and slipping into an accompanimental role.
The very different challenges of the four quartets are met boldly, the quirky nature of the "Harp" as confidently brought off as is the immense stature of the first "Rasumovsky" and the elusive nature of the second in E minor.

INKPOT#99 CLASSICAL MUSIC REVIEWS: MARTINU String Quartets Nos. 1 & 2. Martinu Quartet (Naxos)
The first two numbered quartets are not entirely dissimilar in character, the first written while Martinu (right) was a rank-and-file violinist in the Czech Philharmonic and stylistically already drawing heavily from the emerging vogue of Ravel and Debussy.
There are many memorable passages: the immediate pungency of the opening of the allegro con brio of the first quartet that immediately seizes the listener and refuses to let go; the sprightly dance-like momentum with which the second quartet begins; the lilting dissonances that frame the meditation of the slow movement in the second quartet.
Written when he was a thirteen-year-old and listed as H.1 in the Halbreich catalog, Tri jezdci ("The Three Horsemen") is based on the ballad of the trio of noblemen who brought news of the burning of Jan Hus.

The Fitzwilliam quartet premiered quartet no. 15 in the west, and their recording, made only a few years after the premiere (1975), brings out the bleak contours of a musical language simplified down to the barest of bare bones.
Although the 15 quartets are spread out over 6 CDs as compared to 5 for the Emersons, Decca offers this cycle at roughly half the cost of the DG cycle (it's much cheaper than that, even, on the used market).

classical music - andante - chamber music, expanded for a bigger chamber
Of all the string quartets to adapt for orchestral forces, Janácek's First would probably be near the bottom of most people's lists.
But it's a tricky equation to balance: on the one hand, in a string orchestra you have a greater range of textures and dynamics to play with; on the other, the string quartet is such an intensely self-sufficient medium that to expand it is to risk watering it down.
That this orchestral version of Janácek's quartet works so well as a musical experience is due not only to Tognetti's sensitive approach but also to the superb playing of his band.

(There are other types of brass quartets, but this article will focus on the specific instrumentation of 2 cornets, horn or alto horn, and euphonium.) This is a more-or-less standard ensemble in Europe (especially England) and is a direct parallel to the standard string quartet, which is 2 violins (=cornets), viola (=horn), and cello (=euphonium).
There is also a string quintet that is parallel to a brass quintet: 2 violins, viola, cello, and bass (=tuba).
It seems the string quartet serves audiences well as a more facile ensemble with an instrument (cello) that can still provide a nice bottom end to the sound.
