Chick lit - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
"Chick lit" is a term used to denote a genre of popular fiction written for and marketed to young women, especially single, working women in their twenties.
Aside from its obvious source ("chick" is an American slang term for young woman and "lit" is short for "literature"), the term "chick-lit" includes a reference to Chiclets brand chewing gum, with the implication that readers of the genre are likely to be clichéd, unintellectual females who chew gum and avoid "serious" literature.
However, the genre has also been claimed as a type of post-feminist fiction which covers the breadth of the female experience which deals unconventionally with traditional romantic themes of love, courtship and gender.

Circa 2004, with the release of Lit, and the first single "Looks Like They Were Right," the band broke from the past in nearly every way.
Another collaboration comes in the form of Lit's first-ever DVD, due in Fall 2004, and featuring two-and-a half hours of cool "shenanigans." Plus, it features live gig footage and videos, all compiled by a close friend of the band's from an astonishing 700 hours of videotape.
Like the band's past efforts, Lit is clearly loaded with potential singles, but they never know what will "hit," and still marvel that "My Own Worst Enemy" is still played over 500 times a week on radio.

The Chick Lit Question - 10/20/2003 - Publishers Weekly   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
One sign chick lit may be here to stay is that new variations have evolved from its original definition, which Morrow/Avon executive editor Carrie Feron described as "young, female empowerment stories that may or may not have a romantic element." (For many, however, even the basic chick lit rubric remains elusive.
She also identified "bridezilla lit" (most publishers have granted it the more polite term "bridal lit") as one of the few subcategories with room to grow.
Now there's a range of definitions for chick lit, but the one we seem to be settling in with is the one that trivializes and dismisses it," she said.

Despite periodic rants from literary critics that chick lit shouldn't be allowed in print and fearful speculation from chick-lit writers that the genre has peaked, this trendy offshoot of romance is alive and well and filling local bookstores with pink cover art.
The only disappointing area of the chick-lit world for publishers has been "lad lit." Though lad lit—stories of young men with the same type of angst that chick-lit protagonists seem to suffer—continues to be published, the subgenre hasn't had a blockbuster yet.
Since lad lit seems to be written for men, perhaps the publishers need to rethink their intended audience.

So far, however, booksellers say, none of these books have lived up to their industry buzz, and some publishers and book industry watchers question whether "lad lit," as the genre has come to be called, will ever have a natural readership.
Further proof is the eyebrow-raising number of offshoots that chick lit has spawned, including hen lit (2001), mom lit (2001), lady lit (2003), Latina lit (2001), and bridal lit (2003) or, less charitably, bridezilla lit (2003).
For men we have not only lad lit, but also bloke lit (1999), geezer lit (2002), and dad lit (2002), as well as loser lit (1999) and gangster lit (2001).

Metroactive Books | Lit Issue | YA Lit
Well, thank God for young adult (YA) lit, for while Brown and company have been fannying about in the brain department, the struggle between good and evil, sacred and profane has migrated to the children's section.
Perhaps the most powerful example of an existential void in YA lit is found in Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials, a children's trilogy based audaciously on Milton's Paradise Lost, which should, if only for the richness of its language, be prescribed reading for anyone languishing under the tyranny of John Grisham.
His description of purgatory is some truly disturbing stuff, and it challenges the child reader not only with its concepts, but with its language as well.
