Litchfield was purchased from the Colony of Connecticut in 1719 by a company from Hartford, Windsor and Lebanon, and given town privileges.
The borough of Litchfield, one of the most attractive villages in Connecticut, was the outpost and trading center for the northwestern frontier, and for many years the county seat of Litchfield County.
Leaving Litchfield borough to the southwest on the attractive R. 25, we pass on the right the marble milestone erected by Jedediah Strong in 1787: "33 miles to Hartford 102 miles to New York." The highway goes through the borough of Bantam, with connection by R. 109 for Bantam Lake.

Founded in 1721 Litchfield was designated the county seat in 1751, and by the 1790's the town had become the leading commercial, social, cultural and legal center of Northwestern Connecticut.
Its population grew from 1,366 in 1756 to 2,544 in 1774, and by 1810 Litchfield was the fourth largest settlement in the state with a population of 4,639.

Founded in 1721 Litchfield was designated the county seat in 1751, and by the1790's the town had become the leading commercial, social, cultural and legal center of Northwestern Connecticut.
While Connecticut's coastal and river towns were under constant attack by British forces, and while New York City was occupied by the British, Litchfield became a major "safe town" of the Continental forces.
The school was an institution in transition, begun as a typical small select or private school which offered a simple course of academic and ornamental subjects taught by single teacher, later becoming a large female academy with a full staff of teachers and an academic curriculum rivaling the best schools of the period.

Litchfield County, Connecticut lies on the southern edge of the Berkshire Highlands and contains a wide sequence of metavolcanics and metasedimentary rocks that have been intruded by two different types of granite.
This section of the Connecticut Bedrock Map shows a section of the geology of Litchfield County, and Hartford County to the East.
In the northwest corner of the map is an olive colored formation, this is a rusty weathering gneiss of Cambrian age.

In 1712 Edward was lieutenant in command of the Connecticut scouts ranging from Woodstock to Enfield during the Indian alarms of that period.

Samuel was one of the founders of Litchfield, settling there in 1722 and taking up his abode in the section of the town about a mile to the east of Litchfield proper known as Chestnut Hill, where he owned a large estate.
Samuel died at Litchfield, the exact date is not known, but his death occurred shortly before that of his wife, Hannah, which is recorded 6 July 1770.

Litchfield County is located in the NW part of CT; contains 921 sq mi; and the elevation ranges from approx 250 ft to 2380 ft. Litchfield County was named for Litchfield, England; created October 14, 1751 from Hartford and Fairfield counties.
The three grapevines are thought to represent the three settlements (New Haven, Saybrook and Connecticut) which came together to form the state.
