Founded in 1994 by Levi Asher, Literary Kicks is a website that functions as a digital library of poetry and prose, biography and cultural criticism.
The theme is the Beat Generation, from Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsburg, William S. Burroughs and all their friends and associates through to current writings of extant Beat genre and milieu.

The Summer of Love was a phrase given to the summer of 1967 to try to describe the feeling of being in San Francisco that summer, when the so-called hippie movement came to full fruition.

In 1996 Internet Underground magazine called Levi Asher a "new media star." At the time, the magazine was referring to the popularity of Literary Kicks, Asher's World Wide Web project which features information about the Beat Generation.
Literary Kicks appeared on the internet on July 23, 1994.
I love the idea of the internet as an alternative outlet for creative writing, and I believe the literary community on the web has the potential to introduce some much needed spontaneity and freshness into the slightly stale fiction/poetry scene of our age.

Literary critics, objecting to the Beat 'fad,' refused to take Kerouac seriously as a writer and began to ridicule his work, hurting him tremendously.
Certainly the Beat Generation was a fad, Kerouac knew, but his own writing was not.
An interesting Kerouac tribute CD called 'Kicks Joy Darkness', featuring musical experiments by people like Lee Ranaldo, Patti Smith, Robert Hunter, Joe Strummer and many others can be sampled here.

John Clellon Holmes, a sometime-member of the crowd of friends that would become famous as the Beat Generation, wrote the first published works to herald their significance.
Holmes was born on March 12, 1926 in Holyoke, Massachusetts and gravitated as a young man towards the literary social circles of New York City.
He met Jack Kerouac at a party when both were young unknowns, and they struck up a strong friendship on the basis of their interest in writing.
