However, "literary fiction" does not fit the general definition of a "genre" as it lacks the cohesion of genres like "westerns" or "romance" and lacks any kind of genre conventions.

The end of literary fiction | Critics | Guardian Unlimited Books
Literary fiction is what many writers aspire to, though quite a few will also run a mile at the first hint of it, too.
Literary fiction has been supported by an awesome establishment of writers, editors, critics, agents, publishers and booksellers, all of whom have, in different ways, been unwilling to question the dominant orthodoxy.
In years to come, literary historians may look back on this manifesto and realise this was the moment at which, like the little boy in the fairytale, that someone dared to say out loud that the emperor has no clothes.

 felixsalmon.com: — Literary fiction
If the literary types were selling much more than the genre writers, then it would be clear what the difference is between literary and other fiction: literary fiction aspires to longevity, to being read many years in the future, whereas most other contemporary fiction is written basically only for immediate consumption.
Literary fiction is different, is more important, and not only is taken more seriously than other types of fiction, but – rightly – will continue to be taken more seriously for the foreseeable future.
After all, everybody knows that literary quality is infallibly recognized by the buying public and the critical elite, and that there has never been a book which, twenty or fifty years later, was considered to be over- or underrated.

 CONTEXT: Issue No. 14
Serious literary fiction does, of course, continue to be published by commercial book publishers—doubtless in fewer numbers than would be otherwise warranted by the available supply of gifted writers—but in most cases even those publishing houses interested in promoting literary writers are latecomers to the process of establishing a writer’s presence on the literary scene.
Most typically, aspiring writers begin by producing short fiction and, with rare exceptions, by attempting to place their work in one of the myriad literary magazines that ostensibly exist at least in part precisely to provide initial publication for such writers.
To be sure, everyone interested in the survival of serious literary writing ought to be grateful that any periodicals devoted to its publication continue to appear, regardless of whatever questions one might have about the ulterior purposes they may also be serving.
