LiteStep was initially developed by Francis Gastellu as a closed source project until April of 1998 (version b23), and was then entirely rewritten (versions 24 and up) by the newly assembled development team.
LiteStep is one of the oldest remaining Windows shell replacements.
LiteStep has the biggest number of modules and this allows all Windows users to configure their environment to be rich and full-featured or minimalistic.

In fact, the LiteStep replacement for the Start menu is very attractive and tidy, though it lacks the useful on-mouseover flyout menus.

I used it for a while, and it was really cool (especially with fast multi-desktops), but I got sick of the little bugs and gave it up.
I used Litestep about 3 years ago, and didn't like the fact I couldn't use explorer for browsing the disk.

Litestep has the ability to run modules in a threaded state.
If you have a theme where there are several elements that can be toggled, you might like to know that you can get Litestep to remember the state of these elements (shown or hidden) when it is shutdown or recycled, so you don't have to go and hide or show everything again.
One of the things that the Explorer shell has over Litestep, in my opinion, is the taskbar, due to its dynamically-resizing task buttons.

There are a few different programs available that can seriously hijack the Windows interface for you, all with varying tweaks and trimmings, and trasmute the plain to the phunk.
LiteStep is a shell replacement for Windows that takes its form from the infamous NeXTSTEP desktop (and the Afterstep window manager in Linux, which has made that "NeXT look" even more popular).
Their official position is, of course, that LiteStep is inspired by Afterstep, which has no official ties to NeXTSTEP, a product owned (now) by Apple Computer and somewhat jealously guarded.

Perhaps it was that code with which they talked, referring constantly to their step.rc file and talking about builds not working with some modules… it all seemed terribly complicated compared to the "What skin are you using?" questions the average windowblind user might have.
Configuring Litestep is, at best, time consuming, and at worst, a pain in the arse, as some third party modules conflict with other modules, or even with some builds of the litestep executable itself.
These distributions are by far the easiest way to set Litestep up, and get it up and running, frequently packaging together an installer, shell switcher (for if oyu need/want to revert back to explorer or any other shell), a theme switcher (simialir to say the Sindowblinds skin changing dialogue), and comprehensive documentation.

If you're using Windows 9x and are savvy enough with LiteStep, I would appreciate it if you could see what version of taskbar3 works for you and let me know.
You can read about the changes here, there's nothing too drastic, you certainly don't have to grab it if you've already used v2.0, but the choice is yours.
LiteStep Installer v2.0 will be released as soon as the last phase of testing is complete.
